My girlfriend suddenly broke up with me after 4

My girlfriend suddenly broke up with me after 4.5 years together. We shared a great relationship with its ups and downs but last week she told me she hasn’t been happy for the past six months. She feels I got too comfortable and stopped trying. I honestly thought things were good between us. Yes we had some communication issues over the last year but I believed we always shared the important things.
I want to work things out but she says she needs space. I’m willing to give her that yet I also want to fight for her. I’ve gotten advice from a few friends and even online but I could really use more guidance on how to approach this.
On a personal note I’ve been unemployed for two years trying to transition into a new career. I took a computer support class to move into IT/help desk work after six years as a server. In the meantime I’ve been doing Uber Eats and Favor to cover bills and rent though I’m not happy with it. I’m also setting up home labs to gain experience. Because of my situation she’s had to pay most of the time when we go out which makes me avoid going out too often. I’ve been working on myself and trying to improve because I don’t want her to carry the financial burden. Unfortunately the job market has been tough for someone switching careers.
I just want to show her that I can do better. If I had known she was unhappy I would have tried harder to show her how much I love and appreciate her.
