Are there true friends?

Author

I used to believe that true friends existed and I contradicted anyone who said they didn't. Until I started to see that they weren't happy when I achieved something, and even made me feel bad.

Is there really anyone who is happy when you "reach higher than them"? Analyzing all the friendships I've had, many reactions I didn't notice, but then they gave me food for thought in key moments when I achieved something and I felt envy and discouragement.

And in certain emotional situations, it was as if I didn't really feel support, as if behind the scenes there was a certain satisfaction when I told someone something bad I was going through.

you look back, was there even one person who felt genuinely safe during both your highs and lows, or did it always feel a bit off in the background?

i was noticing who felt lighter around my wins and calmer around my pain. not everyone can celebrate you and that’s not a flaw in you. it just… hurts to see clearly.

this hurt to read because i’ve lived it. i had friends who clapped quietly when i succeeded and leaned in a little too much when i was struggling. realizing that envy was there all along really messed with how i trust people
