Why did they friend-zone me only to come back?

Author

It felt like my life was finally going well when I met someone online. We started talking, and I worked up the courage to ask them out. They said they liked me but needed time to think. Then they friend-zoned me, and later they rejected me. I tried to move on, accepting that it wasn’t meant to be.
After a month, when I had decided to let it go, they came back and messaged me. They told me they liked me and that they had liked someone else before(when i told them that i liked them), someone they left because they realized their own worth. I decided to give them a chance.
But they are so distant. They barely talk, hardly communicate, and it feels like they’re always avoiding me. I don’t know if they’re just avoidant by nature, if they’re avoiding me specifically, or if they’re using me. It hurts to wonder, especially because the person they liked before treated them badly . I keep asking myself what I did wrong and whether I should stay, wait, or walk away, all this just makes me so anxious and stresses me out so much.

they came back and said they liked you, did their actions change at all, or was it mostly their words that changed?

i've been in that spot where someone came back after rejecting me and i wanted it to work SO badly. the hardest part was realizing i was carrying the relationship while she stayed one foot out the door.
