Just broke up after 2 years: why it hurts so much

Author

We broke up 3 hours ago after nearly 2 years together. It was calm loving and probably the most respectful breakup I could have hoped for but it still hurts so much.
We still love each other but we want different things and our paths are moving in different directions. Our love languages didn’t match and we showed up for each other in different ways that slowly became harder to bridge. I’m anxiously attached and he leans more avoidant and I think that gap caught up with us.
My heart feels completely broken. I know it’s only been a few hours but I already feel the weight of it. I asked for no contact because I need space to protect myself and stop myself from going back just to avoid the pain and rejection.
Part of me wishes we could’ve worked through it but I can also see how much would’ve needed to change for that to happen.
I don’t even know how to get through this right now. It feels like my chest has been ripped open and I’m just trying to hold myself together.

i'm really glad you asked for no contact, especially this early.

when you say you wanted different things, was it something that had been coming up for a while, or did it only become clear in the last few weeks before the breakup?

i had one of those "good" breakups too, and somehow it confused me even more because nobody did anything awful. i kept thinking love should've been enough, but sometimes two people can love each other and still not fit

It seems that both of your life goals are not aligned.
