Last year I went through one of the most painful experiences of my life when my ex left me for his best friend. For a while I felt like I was finally starting to heal but lately those old feelings have come rushing back. I've been feeling sad hopeless and missing him in a way that reminds me of the early days after the breakup.
He ended our relationship and soon after started dating the same best friend he had told me not to worry about for over a year. Since then he's made it clear he doesn't want me in his life anymore. Every message I've sent since November has been left on read. Deep down I know staying in contact wouldn't be good for me anyway. The betrayal jealousy embarrassment and anger I still carry make it impossible to have a healthy friendship. It feels like I was emotionally replaced by someone he saw as a better version of me and that thought still hurts.
What makes it even harder is how quickly everything changed. I still struggle with the fact that he's now sharing his life with someone else doing all the little things we used to do together. I never really got the answers I needed about why he didn't want to try again and that lack of closure still leaves me confused. It stings even more because this relationship began with someone he met while we were still together someone he always insisted was just a friend. To make it even stranger his new boyfriend even looks a bit like me.
The truth is I wouldn't get back together with him even if I had the chance. What I really miss is being in a relationship. I miss coming home after work and having someone to cuddle with. I miss the inside jokes cooking dinner together planning dates and building a life with another person. I tried dating again over the winter but I realized I wasn't ready. I ended things with everyone I was talking to because it wasn't fair to start something when my heart was still healing.
Now it's been nine months since the breakup and this wave of loneliness has hit me all over again. Most of my friends are in happy relationships and I'm suddenly the single one. Sometimes I wonder if I'll ever have that kind of connection again. I miss having someone to wake up next to someone to share everyday life with. Some days all I can do is cry because it feels like that part of my life disappeared and I'm scared I may never get it back.

i know it feels like you lost the future, but what helped me was stopping the “why wasn’t i enough” loop every time it started. i just let myself miss the routine, the cuddles, the life stuff, without turning it into a verdict on me.
i got left for someone i was told not to worry about too and then just watched my place get taken like it meant nothing. that kind of replacement feeling sticks for a long time.
when you think about him now, what hurts more, missing him specifically or missing the life you had around him
