My girlfriend and I broke up after 7 months together and I'm struggling to make sense of it.
She told me I was her first real relationship after a few situationships. I loved her deeply and always made sure she knew it. I never had a problem saying I missed her showing up for her emotionally financially or physically. She meant everything to me.
A few weeks after we came back from a birthday trip together she told me she was going away and wanted to do a 10-day phone detox. I respected it even though I didn't really understand why someone would completely disconnect from the people they love.
I guess I assumed I'd be the exception. Not constant texting just one call one "I miss you" something to make me feel like I was still on her mind.
Instead she FaceTimed me once while I was asleep and sent a couple of short check-in texts. That was it.
She even came home early from the trip because things didn't go well but still continued with the detox. She told me I could text or even email her but she wouldn't be checking her phone. Honestly being told to email my own girlfriend felt strange.
We didn't speak for three days even after she got back.
What hurt wasn't the silence itself. It was feeling like she never wanted to break it for me. I would've called her every day if our roles were reversed. In fact earlier in our relationship I went on a trip and made sure to call her every single day just to hear her voice.
When I finally told her how much it hurt she apologized but said I could've reached out too and that she wanted to focus on herself and enjoy the trip without distractions.
That word stuck with me.
It made me feel like I was one of those distractions.
I wasn't asking for hours of conversation. I just wanted one small moment that showed she missed me without me having to ask for it.
Eventually I asked if she wanted to break up. She couldn't really answer just looked away. That was enough for me.
She said I was amazing that I'd treated her well but she didn't think she wanted to continue. We shared one last kiss and I left.
After I got home she texted saying she was scared sorry and didn't want to lose me without fighting for us. She wanted another conversation.
But what broke me was that none of those words came while I was standing in front of her.
I chose not to go back.
I still love her. I miss her every day. Part of me hopes life brings us back together someday but another part knows I can't force someone to choose me.
I wasn't looking for perfection. I just wanted to feel like I mattered enough for one phone call one "I love you" or one "let's figure this out."
Instead I walked away wondering if expecting that was asking for too much.
Was my reaction valid or was I expecting more than I should have?

i don't think your reaction was unfair.
i stayed with someone who always had a reason why they couldn't show up, and i kept telling myself i was asking for too much. i wasn't. i just wanted to feel chosen too.
before the phone detox, did you already feel like you were carrying more of the relationship, or did this whole thing come completely out of nowhere?
i think we are in a similar situation. I had to beg for a bare minimum like communication. A day would go without him ever reaching out to me and everytime I tried to question him , he would start an argument out of it .
