Why did he choose her over me? my heartbreak story

Author

i'm 33f he's 27m. we met on a dating app while i was still healing from one of the worst heartbreaks of my life. neither of us was looking for a relationship. both our profiles said we were just looking for friends. he's an american living in japan and i'm from the philippines.
things moved fast. what started as random chats turned into six-hour phone calls almost every day. we talked about everything from the dumbest jokes to our biggest fears. after two weeks he told me this felt different. he wanted to delete the apps stop talking to anyone else and come meet me. i was honest that i needed to take things slowly because of what i'd been through. he respected that booked a flight to see me anyway and we spent another month talking every day until we finally met.
meeting him felt unreal. he was kind funny affectionate and so easy to be around. i got sick during his visit and he looked after me the entire time. by the end of that trip we decided to be exclusive.
for the next year we made long distance work. we'd see each other once or twice a month either in the philippines or somewhere else in asia. he spent christmas with my family. i met his dad in thailand and later met more of his family online. he talked about marriage almost immediately. he said he wanted me to be his wife and the mother of his children. for the first time in a long time i felt safe. i really believed i'd found my person.
our relationship wasn't perfect. around four months in we had a few arguments but we always talked things through. he did admit he worried about the distance. i also started noticing two things that bothered me. he drank more than i was comfortable with and he lied about little things for no real reason. the drinking worried me but the lying worried me more because it slowly made me question whether i could trust his word.
about a month ago everything shifted.
he started struggling mentally. he'd recently left the marines was adjusting to civilian life in japan and seemed lost. he kept saying he wasn't sure about his future and that the distance scared him. i tried to support him through all of it. we even went to hong kong together two weeks ago and had an amazing trip so i genuinely thought we'd worked through the rough patch.
then he became distant almost overnight.
he took longer to reply stopped calling as much and kept asking for more space. some of the things he told me stopped making sense and he suddenly hid his whatsapp online status. i couldn't shake the feeling that something was wrong.
so i made a tinder account changed my location to his city and found a brand new profile using recent photos i'd taken of him. his bio said he was looking for a long-term relationship.
when i confronted him he admitted he'd made the profile the week before. he admitted he'd matched with a woman from mongolia and planned to meet her on an upcoming solo trip. when i asked if he knew that could lead to cheating he simply said "possibly."
he never denied any of it. he insisted he hadn't physically cheated during our relationship but we talked for four hours and he admitted he needed therapy because something wasn't right with him. he said he didn't understand why he lied or why he kept looking for other people. we broke up that night. what stood out most was that he never once said he wanted to earn my trust back. he just kept saying he understood if i could never trust him again.
then i found out it was even worse.
i reached out to a woman he'd briefly dated before me. he'd always told me they stayed friends so i didn't think much of it. she told me that back in march while he was telling me i was the love of his life and talking about marriage and children he was also telling her he still had feelings for her and was thinking about leaving me.
we compared dates. everything lined up.
she also told me they had phone sex one night after we'd had a fight and briefly broken up. we got back together the next day. he never told me.
that completely destroyed whatever trust i had left.
what hurts most is that i gave him every chance to leave if he wasn't happy. we almost broke up in may and several times after that i told him we could end things if the distance was too much. every single time he cried begged me to stay said he loved me and promised there was nobody else.
all while he was emotionally involved with someone from his past and later looking for someone new on dating apps.
even after everything came out i asked him one simple question. if we tried again would he stop talking to the woman he'd matched with?
he couldn't say yes.
that was the moment i knew he wasn't choosing us.
so i walked away.
i'm devastated because this is the last thing i ever expected from him. everyone who met him thought he was one of the kindest most genuine people they'd ever known. we used to joke that he was a golden retriever because he was so warm and affectionate. we built our lives around making long distance work. we introduced each other to our families. we made plans for a future together.
now i just feel disposable.
like i was enough until i wasn't.
like i happened to be there when he wanted the idea of a family but once he started questioning his life i became someone he could quietly replace.
the worst part is i still don't hate him.
i loved him with everything i had.
but i also know i couldn't stay with someone who broke my trust this deeply especially someone who couldn't even promise to let go of the person standing between us.
i don't regret loving him.
i just wish he had been honest before making promises he couldn't keep.
sometimes i still catch myself asking why i keep becoming the lesson someone else needs before they grow into the partner they give to somebody else. i truly hope he gets the help he says he needs because i wouldn't wish this kind of heartbreak on anyone else.

i had someone talk about forever while quietly keeping other doors open too, and finding out later made me question every happy memory.

when you look back now, do you think the little lies and the drinking were the first cracks, or did they only make sense after everything else came out?

he was inconsistent and dishonest not a reflection of your worth just his inability to stay honest and committed

Man that's a lot to unpack. The whole golden retriever thing is always a red flag in hindsight, isn't it? People who are that good at being what you need often don't know who they are themselves
