Why did he block me after all this time? my struggle with a lost friendship

Author

about a year and a half ago i lost one of my closest friends and i still haven't fully made peace with it.
we met through work and to be clear this wasn't a romantic relationship. i'm happily married and this has never been about wanting an ex back. i just deeply valued our friendship.
what makes it so hard is that i never got an explanation. there wasn't a fight or a falling out. one day he just stopped replying. eventually he removed me from social media but never blocked me.
when he left our workplace about a year ago we did speak and ended things on good terms but i still never got any real answers. then out of nowhere last week he blocked me on instagram. i hadn't reached out messaged him or tried to reconnect. we'd both been living completely separate lives.
being blocked after all this time has thrown me right back into the questions i'd worked so hard to quiet. why now? was he angry? did something happen? did someone say something? i know nobody can answer those questions but my brain won't let them go.
i have ocd and this has become one of my biggest obsessions. i spend far too much time checking social media looking for clues about his life or hoping i'll stumble across something that finally makes it all make sense. i never find anything that gives me closure. i just end up feeling worse but i still catch myself doing it.
the frustrating part is that my life is genuinely good. i'm married to an amazing partner i'm pregnant i have a stable job supportive family and so much to be grateful for. yet this one unresolved friendship still takes up more space in my mind than i want it to.
i've told myself every logical thing i can think of. people grow apart. friendships end. i don't need an explanation to move on. his choices are his own. i understand all of that but emotionally i still feel stuck because there was never any real ending. my brain treats it like a mystery that has to be solved and i don't know how to stop chasing answers that probably don't exist.
if you've gone through something similar did it ever stop crossing your mind every day? how did you accept that you might never know why someone walked away? and if you also deal with ocd or obsessive thoughts what helped you stop searching for answers you were never going to get?
i think i'm looking for reassurance as much as advice. i'd really like to know i'm not the only person who's struggled this much over losing a friend without any closure.

sometimes the hardest goodbyes are the ones we never get to have.

do you think the pain is more about missing him as a person, or the fact that your mind never got a clear reason for why he left?

i lost a close friend who just faded out too, and the silence hurt in a different way because i kept replaying every conversation looking for the thing i missed.

My guess is that he is in love with you, knowing that you are married, he did what most guys will do in such a situation, removed himself and you from each other's life.
