I matched with a girl on social media in early September last year and we instantly clicked. We were texting every day and I remember thinking wow this feels different.
A week later it was my birthday. She took me to a new cinema bought me my favourite aftershave and paid for everything. I joked “are you love bombing me?” She laughed and said no she was just being thoughtful for my birthday.
Over the next few months everything felt amazing. We went on hotel getaways trained together had great chemistry and she constantly told me I was the best thing that had happened to her. She said she felt lucky to have found me and that I was everything she wanted in a partner.
She had a 9-year-old son but I had not met him in person yet. She told me her previous boyfriend who had been with her for 6 years and was almost like a stepdad to her son left two years earlier. She said the breakup affected both her and her child badly and they had both gone through therapy.
She often spoke about what she wanted in an ideal partner and I felt like I matched everything she was looking for. For the first time in a long time I felt like I had found my person.
Then things started to feel different.
She would regularly talk about how horrible her ex was and how much pain he caused her and her son. Around Christmas she mentioned seeing him at Tesco. I told her I understood that must have been strange and left it there because I didn’t want to make her feel judged.
Christmas was great. I met her mum and younger sister. I stayed over when her son was with his dad. She also shared stories about her past including how she had been in another relationship while still emotionally connected to her ex and how complicated that situation became.
At the end of February my granny unexpectedly passed away. It was a really difficult time.
A few days later I met her dad for the first time. I was already struggling emotionally so I didn’t drink but she had been drinking prosecco. During the drive home she played a lot of songs aimed at her ex and kept bringing him up. Her dad also mentioned seeing him recently.
I eventually told her that it felt like her ex still had a lot of space in her life. I said if he had hurt her and her son so badly she deserved to move forward and be happy that chapter was over.
She told me she was over him but she was still affected by everything that happened.
I tried to explain that the week I lost my granny was not the time I had the emotional capacity to keep hearing about someone who had caused her so much pain. She became distant and shut me out.
Because I had been with someone before who used silence and shutting down against me I told her I needed to go home and calm down rather than make things worse.
She was drunk and later texted me saying I would never meet her son and that we were done. It felt extremely hurtful and confusing.
We eventually talked and both apologised. I felt like I needed to understand her situation better and we told each other we loved each other.
The month after that was great again. We completed a charity 10K together and went away. I spoke with her son over the phone and FaceTime during our relationship and I had bought him birthday and Christmas presents.
I told her I would really like to meet him properly. I wasn’t pushing her I just wanted some kind of plan because we both knew about each other and she had talked about us going to Spain together that summer and me being part of her life.
Her son even told his biological father about me which I understood was probably the right thing.
Then I got two days of silence.
We met at the gym on the Saturday and acted like everything was fine. We planned to go to the cinema that Wednesday. The day before she texted me saying I was perfect that we laughed together but she felt “something was missing.”
She ended the relationship over text after 7 months together.
I didn’t reply for three weeks. My family and friends told me I deserved more than a breakup message after everything we had shared.
When I eventually reached out she told me she loved me as a person but wasn’t in love with me anymore and that I deserved better.
I was completely blindsided.
How can someone tell you every day how lucky they are to have you talk about a future with you and then suddenly remove you from their life through a text?
I noticed her WhatsApp had changed her profile picture disappeared and her messages were set to disappearing. It made me wonder if her ex was involved again or if there was something else going on.
Her TikTok reposts after the breakup were about moving on and building a comfortable life after someone leaves but I never left her.
I have never been hurt like this before. I feel like I was so easily discarded after giving everything I had.
We had concerts planned future plans and memories we were supposed to make. I feel like I wasn’t even worth a proper conversation.
It has been three months of no contact. I am in therapy going to the gym and trying to move forward but I still feel stuck.
I am still deeply in love with her. I don’t know how to let go of someone who made me feel like I had finally found my person.
