### The Ghost of Years
We built a house of time and quiet days,
Of folded sweaters, coffee cups, and routines.
I knew the shifting weather of your gaze,
And every silent space that sat between.
But slowly, somehow, seasons lost their light,
The familiar maps we drew began to fray.
We went to sleep as strangers in the night,
And woke to find the love had slipped away.
It hurts the most in ordinary things:
The empty chair, the turning of a key,
The phantom weight a fading memory brings,
The ghost of who we promised we would be.
It takes a moment just to say goodbye,
But takes a lifetime to unlearn the past.
To look at you and finally untie
The hopeful knot we swore was built to last.
Ten thousand days together, now undone,
By quiet tears and softly closing doors.
I walk into the morning cold and numb,
Learning how to breathe when I’m not yours.

you don't have to force yourself to stop loving someone just because the relationship ended. i let myself grieve the life i thought i'd have, one ordinary day at a time, and eventually those mornings stopped feeling quite so cold.
especially his side of the bed
i keep coming back to “the ghost of who we promised we would be.” do you miss the person most, or the life you thought those ten thousand days were going to become?
the person
losing someone after years together and realizing the hardest part was all those tiny routines that still existed after they were gone. the empty chair really does have a way of making the whole loss feel new again.
