Why i can't stop thinking about my ex after six months

Author

i have an ex. at the beginning he was so sweet then he got a lot colder. he said that was just his true character and that he had trouble expressing emotions. we had a horrible relationship full of soul-sucking fights (me anxious him avoidant you can imagine) and we broke up after a year and a half.but it wasn’t all like that. we had so many sweet moments scattered throughout. when it was good it was really good. he tried. he rarely said “i love you” or talked to me sweetly which crushed me a bit but he did little things and was attentive.like cooking me food or snacks when he noticed i was tired or hungry sometimes without me even asking (he’s a really good cook). taking me to nice places inviting me to movies . always making sure i was on time and had everything i needed plus a meal whenever i had to catch a plane or train. all of it spontaneous. i could list more but you get the idea.it melted my heart because even with his “limitations” i could see he was putting his whole soul into those moments.and i miss them so much.i focus on myself i meet other people but even sleeping with them doesn’t feel right. they feel like strangers and my mind just drifts back to him. to his face his smile when he woke up or how he’d get into bed and hug me really tight like a child holding a treasured toy. it was so sincere and adorable. i’ve never met anyone who hugs like that.i miss that intimacy.how do you get over it? it’s been six months. i know i should move on because the rest of the relationship was a nightmare

what stopped me from comparing every new person to him was giving myself permission to stop dating for a bit, because forcing intimacy when your heart is still attached just makes the ghost of him feel bigger.

did the good moments start feeling rare toward the end of the year and a half, or were those sweet acts of service consistent all the way through?

those breadcrumbs of sweetness are what kept me hooked for way too long. i spent months missing those exact quiet morning hugs and the acts of service, completely forgetting how miserable i was during the constant arguments.
