Why did he leave if he loved me?

Author

Two weeks ago he ended our one-year relationship. Even though we were really happy completely compatible and he had strong feelings for me he said he wasn't 100% sure about a long-term future with me and didn't want to string me along.
We never had an official label because commitment was a big step for him but we basically lived like a couple. We spent almost every day together and I stayed at his place most of the time. He acted so in love the entire year and made future plans with me that I held onto. Just a month before the breakup he even told me he was finally sure about spending his future with me and that we'd be moving in together soon. We acted like a couple in front of everyone. But in the end he never fully chose me and that is what makes this so painful.
I am struggling so much. I still love him deeply and secretly hope he comes back and regrets ending things.
I'm currently staying with my sister a bit outside his city. Last night I made a huge mistake and downloaded a dating app. I had no intention of talking to anyone—I just wanted a quick distraction to remind myself that there are other good-looking men out there and that he isn't the only option. I put up a single photo where you can barely see me didn't write a bio and only planned to look for a few minutes.
After just a few swipes his profile popped up.
Every single picture on his profile was taken by me:
One from our very first holiday together when we were so happy. One from a fun date a few months ago.
One from a photoshoot I did with my professional camera that he originally thought was silly.
One from a day trip just 2.5 weeks ago—two days before the breakup—where I was so happy and had no idea what was coming.
A video of us ice skating from our first few weeks of dating. A video from a garden party this summer where you can even see my hand softly massaging his arm at the very end.
It might sound silly but seeing him use the happiest moments of our relationship to find someone new—so shortly after breaking up—hurt beyond words. People might say he just picked recent pictures where he looks good but to me it means so much more. He has plenty of other good-looking photos yet he chose only the ones from our moments together.
What hurt even more was his bio. Under "together we'd..." he listed all the specific activities and daily routines we loved doing together. Under the section describing what kind of woman he's looking for he listed my exact personality detail for detail. It feels like he is trying to replace me with someone else and recreate our exact relationship with a new person searching for my duplicate online after letting me go as if I wasn't good enough.
He is single and free to do what he wants but I never expected him to move on this fast. When we said goodbye two weeks ago he cried so hard that I thought he would at least miss me or grieve for a while. Seeing that he is already looking for a serious long-term relationship breaks my heart.
To make matters worse he reached out to me a few days ago after a period of no-contact. He asked how I was doing told me he didn't want us to stop talking completely and even invited me to visit him for a few days to hang out like old times because his feelings for me hadn't changed—they just weren't enough for a commitment. That text gave me so much false hope. We made plans to play our favorite online game together but yesterday he forgot to cancel and backed out last minute.
After seeing his profile last night I realized how delusional I was being. He is likely already seeing other people and moving on and it makes me so deeply sad to realize how quickly he has moved past what we had.

He’s def trying to keep the door open for his benefit. He wants to have someone on deck to reach out to when he’s lonely or bored. Meanwhile, he’s going to continue to look for someone he assumes will be “better”. But he’ll essentially look for you in every girl he meets.

he’s single now and can technically do whatever he wants. it sounds like he never actually wanted to commit to you. even though it’s hard right now him leaving was probably for the best if he didn’t truly want a future with you

Hi I'm so sorry that you had to go through this, it's horrible and I have a good idea how you feel, but it could have been worse, I've broken up from a relationship that hurts and even more so as she has already moved on but I know I deserve better and so do you!

Girl do NOT look back and don’t visit him. Block him immediately if you see him on dating profiles— I know this all hurts but you need a completely clean break. Going back will just end up with you hurt again. He’s single and he can do what he wants, but it still totally sucks that he’d get on a dating app so fast and that he’d even reach out to you after breaking up with you.
