Why did my relationship end? struggling with self-sabotage after a breakup

Author

my boyfriend who I thought I was going to spend the rest of my life with broke up with me around 3 weeks ago now and I’m still trying to wrap my head around it because I know it was due to me never being in such a healthy relationship before so I didn’t know how to react and started self sabotaging and he didn’t communicate that he felt uncomfortable by some of my actions untill he ended up breaking up with me but I’ve been the most depressed I’ve been in years ever since. We ended on good terms still but I ended up initiating no contact and I’ve been struggling so hard not to break it and I’m hoping the sertraline which I was just prescribed today may be able to take the edge off a bit and help me go back to ig a normal life for now because I am currently struggling so hard in just doing any of my assignments and coursework due to my depression and if I go on like this I’m scared I may have to drop out of college (at least for this year). Also if anyone has OCD I would also like to know how sertraline helps them with that because I’ve had OCD for as long as I can remember and I feel it could’ve been a contributing factor to why our relationship is the way it is now.

that exact guilt after a breakup, convincing myself that if i'd just handled things differently, we'd still be together. i spent so long replaying every little thing i did wrong that i barely noticed how badly i was hurting.

when i started struggling after my breakup, getting through basic college stuff felt impossible, and what helped me was taking things one day at a time and letting my doctor know when i was struggling more than i could manage. i hope the sertraline gives you some breathing room, and please keep your doctor in the loop about how you're doing.

update: It’s a few hours after my first dose of sertraline and the side effects are kicking in and omg they’re awful, I feel tired nauseous and oh so anxious like my anxiety is skyrocketing rn and I thought this was supposed to get rid of my anxiety?!? I’ll see how it goes over time but hopefully these side effects I’m currently experiencing don’t last too long 😭

update 2: I just had one of the biggest panic attacks I’ve had in ages and nearly called my ex. Luckily there’s a mental health clinic in my town I was able to visit which stopped me from calling him.

this is very normal. I started sertraline 1 week after my break up and have now been on it 6 weeks. make sure you eat before you take it or it ruins your stomach for the rest of the day. I find taking it in the morning is most affective too. I had the exact same symptoms as you for the first two weeks, constant panic attacks, restless, no sleep, sweating. after that, they completely disappeared and they’ve been the best thing. please persevere with it, I promise it’ll improve once your brain has adjusted to the seretonin levels

@JoyGiver952 Tyyy I will continue to take my sertraline. I’m on my day 2 now. I took my last tablet right before going to sleep and I did end up waking up at 3am which has been a common theme unfortunately but I feel less anxious and jittery now and I’m also getting the help I need right now and trying to improve myself as my own person which was very different from even just a few days ago. I’m starting to really realise where a lot of my trauma responses come from and how I acted in my relationship and I’m actually using it to improve myself now although I do still dwell on it sometimes because I wish I could’ve of done things differently and wish sm I was still with him but ik this is probably the consequence I needed to actually start working on myself and my past traumas.

do you feel like the OCD was making you doubt the relationship itself, or was it more the fear and overthinking after something felt wrong?

more so dear and overthinking. During our relationship I of course displayed a lot of my ocd traits but one I remember in particular was when I would constantly have anxiety attacks everyday and constantly try and call him because I completely believed that he was going to 100% get killed and this thought would only be calmed by hearing him pick up the phone and re-assuring me he was ok.
