When your best friend becomes a stranger: my 10-year journey

she was someone who i thought would always be permanent. that she would always be with me through everything. we spent our developmental and most fundamental years by each other's side. and no, she wasn't my girlfriend, she was my best friend. my childhood. i didn't have many friends and neither did she, and so we clung onto each other. the one thing i loved about us was we were never serious together. we had the same sense of humor and laughed at everything, so it made everything fun. but i guess that had its downside too because i felt like she would never take me seriously. and i guess i never realized how immature she really was since we always were children, and after life gave us separate paths, we grew out of being unhealthily attached at the hip and stopped having things in common. we talked less. and less. and apparently that meant i don’t care about her, even though i cried to her that i did and i tried to show her by making effort to spend time with her , but we didn’t click the same anymore and after realizing that, it seemed to be a fleeting effort on her part. and so she decided the best option was to cut me off on everything and throw everything away. to believe i don’t care about her after i spent ten years doing just that. it’s hard because she victimizes herself and blames me for something that was mutual. and it’s especially hard to know she would rather have nothing than just look back on what we did share. that’s what stings, when i think about little us. that i once looked at that girl and thought she would be the one i would grow old with.

if you love her, say it. Life is too short, get that closure to move on. the worst she'll say is no, and even if you didn't ask shed still be no contact so there isn't really much to lose. if anything, she'll just realize how much you love her

i think that would be the rational thing to do, but i did try. and she still decided she didn’t want me in her life anymore. and if 10 years didn’t convince her, what will? and if she has already cut me off, i believe she would do it again.

@Sparklr822 tbh I don't know the full context, but from what I'm hearing it doesn't feel like a serious reason to cut you off it sounds like an argument that got heated and could easily be resolved with gentle apologies. people grow up, get jobs, start new lives, it's normal to spread apart. my best friend and I didn't talk for 4 yrs cuz life happened we moved to different cities, we also had an argument like "do u even care, you didn't contact me" but we made amends and now we laugh about it

pretty much my story except it was 12 yrs and it's a he. we didn't spend childhood together but we went thru some really rough years. I thought if we could make it thru them, we could face anything and be ok. Not so. The moment things opened up for him and he had other options, he took them. I was so stupid thinking he would chose me eventually so I waited around for a day that never came. For behavior that he never had any intentions to change. He lied to my face. Said whatever he thought I needed to hear just to keep me falling for his shit and getting me into bed. It blows my mind who your sure you know this person, but you find out you don't

i hate that she’s treating those ten years like they meant nothing just because you grew apart

it’s the worst part to me, but in a way i guess eye opening. that two people can experience the same thing and see it so differently .

when you cried to her and tried to show her you still cared, did she ever really hear you, or had she already decided what kind of person she wanted to believe you were?

i had a friendship like that too, where someone was part of almost every memory i had growing up, and losing them felt like losing a whole version of myself.

it’s bittersweet. i’ll always have a place in my heart for her, but i won’t dwell on the past, you know?
