Asking because of my own situation right now, i want know how long, if you or them moved on by that time, if it went well or not, if people say this to lie to soften the blow of breaking up or do they actually mean it.

i fell for this exact trap. my ex set a "check in" date for three months out after dumping me, and i spent every single day counting down like a prison sentence while she was out living her life and completely moving on. when that day finally came, it was just a cold text confirming she had zero intention of coming back, and it broke my heart all over again. đź’”
treating that future date as a complete lie is the only way you protect your peace. even if they meant it in the moment, people usually set those little reunion timelines just to avoid dealing with your tears and soften their own guilt for walking away.
did they give you a specific date and reason to meet up, or was it just one of those vague "let's talk in a few months" promises?
you can scroll down and see my comment talking about the situation, but he did give me a specific date, april 7th and he promised he would and we both put it in our calendar, he also promised we aren’t going to talk to anyone else so im not sure
I think it's to soften the blow. Suddenly losing a loved one can be traumatic to your nervous system, so the idea that it's not fully over calms you both. it gives hope for the future, but also I don't recommend it as it just causes false expectations and more hurt when you see each other with another partner
Hey,
Broke up 3 days ago after a 8 year long relationship. We love each other intensely but things like wanting different things in the future and family differences we had to split up. I feel to soften the blow we decided to meet in 6 months or a year to see if our perspectives have changed. Idk how things will go then either. I feel we would be different people by then and would rather continue no contact in the best interests of both parties. But this still gives me hope so I am starting to believe people make this agreement to soften the blow for sure. What are your views on this?
me and him never got the chance to discuss the future or family, he was scared about my future and how i wouldn’t be an adult, that i would’ve kept doing the same things i’ve being doing like not having a job, not learning how to drive, not taking care of myself, but while he was scared he wanted to have a future with me, he communicated that all time but because i didn’t figure my life out he got scared and i don’t blame him, we promised we’d break no contact on april 7th. we both want the same thing i just didn’t show it and i was living my life to childishly, i think my situation is a bit different than yours because me and him did want the same and i personally think if we take the time apart to grow and learn we could change as people for the better and have that healthy relationship we both wanted, he told me straight up that he’s not sure about us getting back together but he does want to see me, we promised we wouldn’t talk to any other people during this time and that he still does love me, he may contact me sooner. im 50/50 that its to soften the blow but also to see if the future changes and both people can improve. maybe im delusional but i still have some hope that if me and him both take this time to improve that there could be a chance, maybe not immediately but i think we could rebuild that connection again
