A week before my 25th birthday my fiancée ended our engagement. It's only been 24 hours and both of our families now know it's over.
We got engaged on New Year's Day 2026. It wasn't a spontaneous New Year's proposal it just felt like the perfect moment. Looking back things had been declining for a while mostly from her side though I kept hoping we'd find our way back.
I'm lucky in many ways. I have supportive friends family my dog hobbies and interests. I know how to ask for help when I need it. I go to the gym every day I don't drink because of my job and I have people around me who care.
But none of that changes the fact that I'm sitting in my childhood bedroom staring at the custom engagement ring I designed for her wondering what I'm supposed to do now.
The hardest part isn't just losing a relationship. It's losing my best friend. My person. The one I went to after difficult days. I work in a profession where I regularly deal with death grief and intense emotions. I've always been able to cope with those things because I had her beside me. Now she's gone.
The breakup was respectful. Her family has even sent me kind messages. There was no betrayal no huge fight. Yet somehow that almost makes it harder.
It feels like my heart has been kicked out of my chest. She's not gone from the world but she's gone from my future and I'm struggling to accept that.
So I guess my question is simple:
What's the next step?
I know how to survive the day. I know how to keep my routine. I know how to lean on the people around me.
What I don't know is how to let go of someone I've spent more than three years loving. Someone I planned to marry. Someone I promised a future to.
When do you even think about dating again? How do you go from seeing one person as your forever to imagining someone else in that place?
Right now I can't picture it at all.
So for anyone who's been here before what came next?

you picture the future right now, what hurts more, losing her specifically or losing the life you two had already built in your head together?
i stopped asking myself when i'd date again and just let that question sit unanswered. one day i realized i hadn't thought about my ex for a whole afternoon, then eventually a whole day. that's when i knew something was changing
my engagement ended a few months before the wedding and the thing that wrecked me wasn't losing the relationship, it was losing the person i told EVERYTHING to. 24 hours in, i couldn't even think about the future, i was just trying to get through the next hour.
