My ex and I had known each other for around 12 years. He pursued me for almost a decade before I finally agreed to give our relationship a chance. We were together for nearly two years and we had serious conversations about marriage. He used to call me his family his princess and would tell me that as long as his heart was beating it would beat for me. I truly believed he was the person I would spend my life with.
He was always more emotionally reserved and distant than I was but I accepted that because I loved him and understood that people show love differently. I never wanted to pressure him or ask for too much. Most of the time I adjusted to his schedule because he worked long hours and was often stressed. Even when I wanted more attention I usually tried to bring it up gently instead of turning it into a fight.
One thing that always hurt me was the way he handled conflict. Whenever we had a serious disagreement his first reaction was often to withdraw. There were times when he would disappear for days sometimes even a week and I would be the one trying to fix things and bring us back together. Looking back I feel like I was often the one bending and making sacrifices to keep the relationship going.
The breakup happened while he was on a vacation in Bali. I knew he was exhausted from work and I wanted him to enjoy his time away so I tried to give him space. During that same period I was dealing with my own health issues and even ended up in the hospital but I still tried not to put more stress on him.
While he was there I noticed he had followed a woman he met on the trip on Instagram and she had followed him back. It really hurt me because I had always been completely loyal to him. I never entertained anyone else or crossed any boundaries because I genuinely saw him as my future husband.
When I asked him about it he said she had asked for his number but he didn’t want to give her his WhatsApp so he gave her his Instagram instead. He said she had taken his phone and added herself. He kept saying it was nothing and that he forgot about her because she didn’t mean anything.
The follow itself wasn’t the only thing that hurt me. It was the fact that he never told me he met another woman never thought about how I might feel and kept dismissing my feelings by saying it was insignificant. I even asked him how he would feel if I did the same thing and he admitted he would have been upset too.
I reacted emotionally and told him that I could accept being with someone who was naturally distant but I couldn’t be with someone I felt I couldn’t trust. I was hurt and angry when I said those things. Later I apologized for the way I communicated and told him I regretted letting my emotions take over.
Instead of having a calm conversation and working through it everything turned into how I had ruined his vacation. He told me I ruined his life that I created chaos and that he already had enough problems without mine. He said he didn’t want anything to do with me anymore.
I begged him not to end our relationship this way. I asked him for one proper conversation because I couldn’t believe that one argument could destroy something we had spent 12 years building. He refused.
What hurt even more was the double standard. During our relationship he had said deeply hurtful things to me in moments of anger including calling me names that broke me. I forgave him because I believed we were bigger than our worst moments. But when I reacted out of hurt I wasn’t given the same understanding.
After that I spent days trying to fix things. I apologized told him I still loved him and asked for one calm conversation. I explained that I wasn’t trying to attack him I just wanted us to understand each other and work through it together. He never replied. It has now been three weeks of complete silence.
I still love him and I miss the person who used to call me princess and made me feel safe. But I’m also starting to see the parts of the relationship that hurt me. I often felt like I was the one adjusting while he decided when we were close when he needed distance and eventually when it was over.
I know I wasn’t perfect. I know I made mistakes and I regret how emotional I became. But I also struggle to understand how one painful argument could erase a relationship that was supposed to lead to marriage.
The hardest part isn’t just losing him. It’s knowing that he wasn’t willing to sit down and fight for us. After everything we shared I still feel like we deserved one honest conversation before letting it all go.

I'm so sorry for what happened to you, it's really painful. The pattern I can see here is that he was more interested in the chase than he was in the actual relationship. It's like, he was ready to pursue you for years, just to turn into someone else after reaching the goal. And then the lovely words became bitter ones (it doesn't matter if it was during conflicts, respect is a non negotiable). The ultimate thing was the other woman
He pursued you for 10 years....kinda I'm glad it ended cause no one deserves that much time and also he did way too much than he should have. Also him calling you names isn't good. Just move on
You and I are living the same exact life. You just put into words everything I’ve ever jotted down in my diary. I hope you feel better soon. I hope everything works out for you in the end.
I relate to this so much. I still want to know why it’s been so easy for my ex to just disappear instead of deal.
Omg i feel this to my core. My partner made many mistakes and we discussed them and worked through them, but if ever I made a mistake I didn't get the same empathy and understanding. We all can say things in the heat of the moment or respond in ways we aren't proud of. We are all human and should be loved and accepted for all of us.
