Why i had to let you go even though i loved you

I let you go because I love you. My brain was screaming at me to stay, to keep fighting, to make everything right again. I held on so tight that I left nail marks in your skin. But then I looked into your eyes and saw the pain I was causing. Your eyes were begging me to let go. They had been for a while, I realized, but I never looked closely enough. Or perhaps I didn't want to. So in that moment I thought about how much I love you. I always wanted the best for you, and I wanted to believe that was me. But looking at the pain in your eyes and the marks in your skin made me realize the pain I was inflicting. Love doesn't always mean holding on as tight as you can. Sometimes it means knowing when to let go. So finally, I let my grip loosen and you were gone.

when you looked into their eyes, did they actually tell you they wanted to leave, or was that the moment you finally let yourself believe what they'd been showing you?

i had a moment like that too, when i finally saw my ex had been done for a long time and i was the only one still trying to keep us alive. letting go felt like ripping out part of myself, but i couldn't keep asking someone to stay who didn't want to.

I feel this. I had to let go of someone I loved, who would have kept staying if I pushed it. We could have gone through the cycle again, but I had to set him free for both our sakes.
