Why seeing her move on feels like a second breakup

Author

I was about 7 months into no-contact and thought I was finally starting to stabilize. still cried at some songs.. but the level of pain was nowhere close to during the breakup. that destroyed me. I basically stopped eating and cried as a full-time job

anyway. I thought i was starting to heal. starting to move on. then I found out she's with someone else.

It honestly felt like I was reliving the breakup all over again. All the emotions I thought I'd been working through came rushing back, and now I feel like I'm questioning whether I've made any progress at all.

She was my childhood crush. i know a lot of people assume that it's just puppy love and not actually real because of my age, but i had a rough childhood with divorces and a lot of yelling and not a lot of peace. I loved her from the time I was 13, and I'm 16 now. She wasn't just my first relationship, she was someone I'd hoped I'd end up with for years. she basically became my idea of peace and a happy ending. I always hear "That's too much," "That's unhealthy," and yeah, okay, i get it. it is. but i really didnt know better.

I'm not angry at her for moving on. I know she has every right to. It just hurt in a way I wasn't prepared for.

I guess I just needed to get this off my chest.

If there's any adult here who's had a really heartbreaking first love, id love to hear what moving on felt like and if it really does get better.

thanks for reading

my first love was tied to my idea of home too, and when i saw her move on it felt like losing her all over again.

unfortunately this won't be your last heartbreak in your life. The thing about love is that it includes heart break at some level and its only through these times that we truly learn and grow to prepare us for when we do meet the one. Yes it does get better I promise.

when someone has been your safe place for years, healing isn’t just missing a person, it’s learning how to build that peace inside yourself again. i’ve been there, and it took me longer than i wanted to admit.

when you found out she was with someone else, what hurt the most, losing her specifically or feeling like the future you imagined with her was gone

I feel like the first seven months of the breakup I was grieving her, but somewhere in the back of my mind there was still a what-if lingering. what if we tried again. what if she came back. what if that future with her isn't dead, just dormant. but seeing her with someone else shattered that what-if, so now i feel like im grieving that future with her too, now.
