Why did he ghost me after so much connection?

Author

I was dating this guy for about a month and a half. It was still casual but I fell for him much harder than I expected. He seemed to genuinely like me too. Every time we spent time together he told me he had fun and we saw each other almost every weekend since we lived an hour apart and he worked evenings.
He always talked about the future. He wanted to go back to school kept telling me about his long-term fitness goals talked about places he wanted to visit and books he wanted to read. We were even figuring out a haircare routine together bcause he wanted to "work on his appearance" even though I thought he looked great already.
in June he called me and told me he was in a really dark place. He asked me what kept me alive after my own suicide attempt and why I no longer wanted to die. I told him everything I could think of. I tried to give him hope. I stayed on the phone with him that night because I wanted to know he'd still be there the next morning.
The next day I left for a family vacation but I still checked in and offered to call him. He barely replied. The only time he answered was when I asked if he was still alive. He told me he was hanging in there.
The day after that he said he was anxious but okay and that it was something he needed to work through on his own. Then he asked how my day was.
That was the last message I ever got from him.
At first I thought he had ghosted me. We weren't officially together so I figured maybe he'd decided to move on or just didn't want to have the conversation. It felt completely out of character because he'd promised me he would never ghost me.
A few days later I sent him one more message. I told him I cared about him that I understood if he needed space and that I hoped I'd hear from him when he was ready. He never replied.
Because he'd told me he was talking to his therapist and said he was okay enough I convinced myself he was getting help from people who knew how to support him better than I could.
Yesterday his dad texted me.
He told me that he died by suicide on June 29.
I completely fell apart.
I can't stop thinking that I should've done more even though I know he never really gave me the chance. I wish he had called me. I wish he'd called his mom his therapist anyone.
I still have voice memos from him. I can hear him laughing joking around going off on random little rants. My brain still expects that if I drove to his apartment he'd answer the door.
I can't make sense of the fact that someone who was holding me just a month ago is simply... gone.
His dad told me they truly believed he was getting better. He was talking about the future making plans acting like someone who wanted to keep living.
That's the part I can't understand.
My heart feels hollow. The world lost someone who was so kind gentle and deeply empathetic and I don't know how life just keeps moving when he's no longer here.

You did everything you possibly could and you were a good friend there for him. I am really sorry that you are going through this. Don't ever blame yourself. You would have been sunshine in his life.
