I never knew I could be this vulnerable until she came into my life.
I grew up in an abusive environment where women were often disregarded and diminished. Because of that, I made a promise to myself: I would never take advantage of a woman. I would treat her with respect and make sure that consent and understanding were always present in everything we shared.
I was eager to build a life with someone, but I didn’t realize that love doesn’t come with a manual. All my life, I dismissed the “alpha male” and stoic ideals because I believed that being human means being honest, accountable, and willing to apologize when you’re wrong. I chose vulnerability. I shared my feelings, asked for forgiveness when I fell short, and never saw those things as weaknesses.
I raised myself to be a protector and a provider. What I failed to understand was that good intentions are not always enough. Not listening well enough has cost me more than I expected, and that’s a lesson I have to own.
My greatest strength has always been that when I choose someone, I do it wholeheartedly. I don’t hold back when I decide to build a life with another person. That same strength can also become my weakness when I invest deeply before I fully understand what is needed from both sides.
Today, I can read between the lines. I know I could walk away with my dignity and integrity intact and I still have both. What I feel now isn’t desperation or anger. It’s simply the discomfort of standing exposed after giving so much of myself, trying to find my footing again.
I may not have what I hoped for, but I am left with something equally important: the consequences of my choices, the lessons they carry, and the opportunity to become better because of them.
I don’t regret loving sincerely. I only know now that sincerity must also be matched with wisdom, boundaries, and the willingness to listen. That is not weakness. It never was.

glad you're giving yourself credit for owning your part.
Sometimes we have to be self aware and Acknowledge our Mistake and wrong Doings
when you say not listening cost you more than you expected, what do you feel you missed hearing from her that you can finally see now?
We all carry wounds that shape us. I never judged her or what she had been through. When she spoke about finances and debt, I simply responded from who I am, I don’t run from responsibility, and I believed challenges could be faced together.
Looking back, I realise it probably wasn’t about money at all. I wish I had listened more deeply instead of trying to reassure her. I don’t blame her or myself. Sometimes two people can care for each other and still misunderstand one another.
i used to think loving harder would make up for the ways i didn't fully understand my partner. it didn't. i had to learn that listening is love too, and that lesson changed me.
Wow. it is so beautiful how intune you are with yourself. Thankyou for sharing this post.
I agree!
