Why today is hard: remembering my ex on her birthday

Author

I’m 33 and today is my ex’s birthday. Tomorrow is mine.
I left her six years ago.
At the time I thought I was making the right choice. I believed I had to choose between giving everything to my career and being the partner she deserved or giving up my dream job and staying with her.
I chose my career.
I was scared that giving up on my dream would leave me feeling empty inside. I also didn’t want her to spend years with someone who was always busy emotionally unavailable or unable to give her the time and attention she deserved.
In my head I was protecting her.
I thought I was doing the right thing.
I was young. I was foolish. I thought I had everything figured out.
The hardest part is that we still loved each other when I left.
Six years have passed and I haven’t loved anyone the way I loved her. I haven’t trusted anyone in the same way either. I never really let myself get close to anyone after her.
She was the only person I ever felt completely safe with.
Today is her birthday.
And next month she’s getting married.
It’s destroying me.
I’ve been crying so much today. I haven’t cried like this in six years. It feels like everything I buried for all these years came rushing back at once.
I remember telling her that I was too broke and too pathetic to marry her. I didn’t want her to end up in a marriage where she wasn’t happy because of me. I wanted to become stable first. I wanted to be able to give her a better life.
Now I realize how foolish that thinking was.
If I could go back I would take almost any job. I would have fought harder. I would have tried to figure things out instead of assuming I had to choose one life over the other.
She used to ask me Why didn’t you fight for me?
Why didn’t you do this?
Why didn’t you do that?
Those questions destroyed me because I never had a good answer.
I genuinely thought I was doing what was best for both of us.
Maybe I wasn’t.
Today I saw a picture of her fiancé giving her flowers.
And something inside me just broke.
I want to be clear about one thing. I don’t want to ruin her wedding. I don’t want to interfere with her life. I don’t want her back.
I lost her.
And I genuinely hope she has a beautiful life. I hope she’s happy.
I just feel like I’m grieving someone who has been gone from my life for six years and somehow today it finally hit me that she’s really moving on.
I know I made my choice. She moved forward. I have no right to expect anything from her.
But man...
it hurts.

I'll be honest that I never understood why people prioritize their job over someone that loves you. I've been dumped this way and it sucks. Like I'm there for you for all the ups and downs. Why are you leaving if I'm there for you? Why do people feel the need to leave a place for good when they have someone willing to be with them and they just can't accept that? It's confusing and I'm at the point where it's one of my first questions I will ask a date.

I'm so sorry you're going through this. 😞 I'm going through my own little hell right now. She too is choosing her career and her friends over what we had. Plus she most likely was cheating. So there's that little extra kick in the nuts.

It’s normal that you wanted to be financially stable before you married her. It’s normal that you didn’t know how to make that happen while maintaining a relationship with her.
I’m sorry for your loss.

I know it hurts, but you loved her enough to let her go because you couldn't give her what she deserved. Be proud as sad as it is to watch her be happy with someone else.

Your story isn't over, even though you haven't met anyone like her yet, you need to open your heart to allow that person to come in. She is out there.

You can still love someone from afar, but you need to end the grieving. Appreciate the love you shared and the beautiful moments and just leave it at that. She let you know your heart worked and you have the capacity for love.

Just be open to life and the opportunities that arise. Allow yourself to be curious about uncertainty of life. Love is all around, especially inside yourself
