Why did i beg him to stay after everything?

Author

My ex texted me a few days ago to tell me he left his girlfriend for me, and honestly, that made me feel chosen. I thought it meant he really loved me—as if I wasn't totally dulu and cuckoo for Cocoa Puffs. Lol. I believed him when he said he was ready to put in the work and that he was all in.
The reality is, he has a history of being verbally and physically abusive. There were so many heavy issues in our relationship: he wanted specific details about my sex life with previous partners, dealt with his own insecurities, kept accusing me of lying and being dishonest, and constantly twisted my words. We talked about counseling—I wanted us to do intimacy counseling together, and he said he would. Then he just changed his mind. That’s his pattern: he promises me everything when we get back together, and then changes his mind down the road.
When I finally told my family that we had gotten back together, my mom broke down and cried because she knows he's abusive, and my dad said he wouldn't be welcome in his home, reminding me that a leopard never changes its spots. Literally right after I told my family, he dumped me, saying he didn't know how to fix things.
All he had to do was treat me with respect and kindness over time, not abuse me, and actually show it with his actions. It wasn't going to be a quick overnight fix, and my family wasn't just going to welcome him back right away. It wasn't rocket science. But in the end, he wasn't willing to put in the work. He didn't really love me. I see that now.
What's the most embarrassing part for me? When he was ending things, I actually begged him to stay. I didn't understand why I did that until I watched a specific YouTube video that broke down what was actually happening in my head:
Loss Aversion: Humans are hardwired to feel the pain of loss about twice as intensely as the joy of equivalent gains, which often leads to desperate attempts to "fix" things.
The Idealization Trap: The brain often rewrites memories to make the partner seem perfect, shielding you from the reality of why the relationship ended.
Defense Mechanisms: The ego deploys tactics like rationalization, projection, and denial to protect itself from the existential crisis of being left. I didn't want to admit I was being dumped.
Bargaining and Power Dynamics: The person left behind may struggle to accept the shift in power when someone chooses to leave. At first, I couldn't accept it. I kept telling him that I loved him and was willing to put in the work, because I wasn't willing to face the fact that he wasn't willing to change, and that deep down, he didn't really love me.
He was a narcissist, and I was just a placeholder. Because he couldn't control me the way he had in the past, he no longer found me useful.
It’s so hard to admit that I was used and abused and still wanted him. It’s hard to admit it was just a trauma bond, and that I would have settled for so little because I thought so little of myself.
Has anyone else begged for their ex to stay when they should have let go?

do you think you were begging for him to stay, or for the version of him you kept hoping he would finally become?

I was hoping he would become who he was in the beginning when he love bombed me. I kept trying to change him. I was in love with his potential not him.

i’ve learned that the promises mean very little when the behavior keeps coming back.

He promised to change and put in the work but never followed through. when it was time to follow through he would attack me and try and make everything my fault. he couldn't take accountability or see things from my point of view or support my emotional needs. at times he would shut down and not pick up the phone. it got exhausted being in a one-sided relationship and putting in all the effort.

i’ve begged an ex to stay while knowing deep down he was hurting me too. that shame hit HARD afterward, but wanting someone you’re trauma bonded to doesn’t erase what they did to you
