Feeling anxious about my birthday and my ex's potential reach out

My birthday is coming up this Friday, October 23rd, and to be completely honest, I’m feeling really nervous and stressed about whether my abusive ex might try to reach out.

It’s such a conflicting emotional space to be in: on one hand, I know I'll feel a massive wave of relief if he doesn't contact me, but on the other hand, I know a part of me might feel a weird sense of disappointment. In the past, I haven’t always been able to stay strong. I’ve gotten sucked back in because the love-bombing and the intensity of the honeymoon phase at the beginning always felt so powerful.
This time, I’m determined to break the cycle.

What is the Gray Rock Method?
As my poster highlights, the Gray Rock method is a strategy used to deal with toxic or abusive individuals by becoming as uninteresting, unresponsive, and emotionally flat as a "gray rock." When you give them zero emotional reaction, drama, or engagement, they eventually lose interest and stop trying to feed off your energy. Paired with the reminder that "No response is a response," it's all about starving them of the attention and access they crave.
To help keep myself accountable, I designed and printed this poster for my wall. I wanted to share it here just in case anyone else needs it—feel free to screenshot it and print it off for your own space if it helps you stay strong, too!

The Steps I'm Taking
I’ve already done everything I can to protect my peace:
Changed my phone number so he cannot call or text me.
Blocked him on every single app and platform I can find.
My biggest lingering fear is that he might somehow track down an obscure chat app or find a backdoor way to reach me, just like he has in the past. But I am trying to focus on what I can control. I have a wonderful, special day planned with my family, and I get to spend time babysitting my nephew, so I'm determined not to let him ruin my peace.

I Would Love Your Advice & Support
Has anyone else had an ex try to reach out on your birthday? Did they talk to you, or how did you stay strong and manage to not reply?

If anyone has any advice, words of encouragement, or shared experiences, I would love to hear them. Reading your stories always helps me feel a little less alone in this. Thank you for listening!

same weird disappointment when my abusive ex stayed silent, even though silence was exactly what i wanted.

Thank you for sharing that that I'm the only one who feels disappointed by the silence but also wants them to stay silent. ♥️

blocking him everywhere was a huge step for me, but i also told my family not to pass along any messages if my ex tried reaching me. i'd protect that birthday you've planned and let yourself enjoy every second of it.

if he does manage to contact you somehow, do you have someone in your family who knows the history and can help you feel safe?

My mom and dad will be with me all day and they know everything. I'm going to put my phone on airplane mode tonight so nothing will come through. hopefully he doesn't reach out. I don't think he will but you never know.
