My boyfriend and I have been together for almost six years. Overall we’ve had a really strong relationship but since around October I’ve started to feel my feelings for him fading. I tried to ignore it and hoped it would go away but I’ve reached a point where I can’t pretend anymore.
I know I’ll probably be seen as the bad guy but I feel like the right thing to do is end the relationship so he can eventually heal. The hardest part is that he isn’t ready for this at all and I know the breakup won’t be mutual.
For anyone who has been broken up with after a long-term relationship how can I make this as kind and painless as possible for him? He’s genuinely an amazing person and deserves the world but I can’t stay in a relationship where I’m no longer fully happy. I’m scared this will completely break him.

, it won't be easy, but sadly people can grow apart, just honestly explain to him how you feel and set reasonable boundaries. If it is more mutual it will soften the impact. Best of luck, hope it goes well
This is going to hurt like hell but it’s the kindest thing to do. He probably won’t want to but GO NO CONTACT. DO NOT STAY FRIENDS. LEAVE HIM ALONE.
100% his life won't be ruined if you were planning on dumping him anyway, infact his life will be much better if you do this before children and marriage.
Six years starting at 15 means you two basically grew up together. That's not just a relationship ending, it's the end of the version of himself that existed with you. He doesn't know who he is without you in that role.
please don't ghost him like my ex did me after being together for 5 years...
It won't be easy but dragging this on any longer will only cause harm. If you've been feeling this way for 9 months, it's time to face that you need to have the talk. My advice is, if you know any of his close friends, maybe tell them ahead.
I would say be honest about your feelings, dont give him false hope, but also let him be upset and be patient and kind. its taken me 4 weeks to fully accept my break up and my ex has taken all my calls. talked when I needed and not let me blame myself when his feelings has changed. its made it easier
There is no easy way to break up.
6 years together, you and him built a foundation.
maybe talk to him at first? you guys are 6 years already
yes it sounds selfish if you suddenly will bring up break up
id suggest talk to him about what you are feeling first and then see what happens after
there is no easy way to do this unfortunately. the pain will be inevitable. however also don’t try to be friends or give false hope. and yes break up only if you are absolutely sure. don’t be harsh but be very clear. it will break him one way or the other just be honest don’t dismiss his feelings or the time you had together. unfortunately things can change.
