Why did my ex show up after a year of silence?

Author

Hi. This is weird. Uhm, for context, It has been almost a year since he left me in no contact. Last Saturday I was attending to an anime-con with a good friend of mine. Suddenly, when I was checking WhatsApp's status, I see that my ex has uploaded a photo of his food, where clearly you could see he was sitting on the grades of the con. He was saying with no words, "hey, I'm here". I haven't seen a status of his for a year I must say. I showed it to my friend. I was angry and alerted. Also, I was doing cosplay so left my glasses at home, I could reconnais any face. Few hours later, I was walking around the con when a message of his very best friend came in: "Hey long no see, what's up? Are you at the con? I think I have might seen you cosplaying Atom Eve? My blood turned to literal ice. I panicked a bit and asked my friend for advice. She told me to not respond. That's what I did. but as we got out of a shop, he, and some other friend of my ex intercepted me. All clinical and "friendly". This guy even lend for a hug and I hugged him quickly because I wanted him to leave. I really didn't understand was going on. and more important, If they where looking for me, where was my ex? I turned back to look up for my friend but some other random guy was talking to her. the second time my blood became colder than ice. It was him walking to me few steps away. All restrained, shy, sad and very contrite. He said "hi... I'm sorry" his best friend keeper talking shit as if it was normal. Asking me for what I've been doing for the last year and things like that. This guy was there where I had my last argue with my ex. And this guy knew the shit he was doing keeping away from me. So, obviously this felt rough and disgusting. Like somehow of trap.

My ex started to say, "c'mon don't pay attention to him, I think we should leave you alone, I'm sorry." His friend said welp this feels uncomfortable I was trying to break the ice blablabla.

Finally, my ex took a step back and started getting away, my friend grabbed my wrist and told me "no, we are leaving, this was so cruel that I can't believe my eyes" We got out of con and I asked her to get in again, I was angry but, he was there, standing in front of me. I remained in silence, shocked. My friend ended up crying of frustration. I felt terribly bad. I was supposed to be crying not her. But she felt it hard, she felt genuinely bad for me and what they have just done to me.

Few hours later, almost at night, I received a WhatsApp, from him. After a year of absolute silence, he wrote this:

I apologize for the previous interaction. I didn't mean to make you uncomfortable, although I ended up doing so. I had been wanting to interact with you, and for a long time I've thought about the possibility of rekindling our friendship, but the guilt is eating me up, and I don't know how to do it, making everything worse and hurting you again. It's my mistake, and the least I can offer is this apology. You don't need to reply to this. I understand if you don't want to know anything, and I would completely understand if you wanted to block me.

I... I really didn't know how to feel. I didn't cry but I felt divided.

It is not that simple as decide if I answer or not. For the last year, I've been working of an animated videoclip of a song I really liked and really resonated with me and the grief and pain I felt since he left. It doesn't show any name. It just has to characters that kinda look like us but Could be any nerd guy with medium long hair, bangs and glasses (I mean his character). Well, I the song there is a verse that says "You call crazy to the girl you said was too mature for her age" and I drawed me, pointing the girl (so the verse will not talk about me) a teenage girl with a sign which says "she is 16" and his character shivering in shame aside.

The truth is that, he was talking with an underage girl, hiding it from me and that was the topic of our last argue. He said back then, he never touched her, he only felt his ego grow because of her attention (absolutely disgusting when it was clear she was into him, or at least attracted to him) So, you see we this is complicated?

I haven't finished my animation. In fact I'm only one person working on it. it's difficult. But I do this to gave a voice to myself of 2025. I can't fail her to tell her version of the story, and what I was feeling month per month.

So, If I meet him and we have a talk, I can't tell him about the animation. Later on if I ended it, It feels like I'm a traitor even though I was the victim all along. If I don't respond, I might loose the opportunity to hear that shit I've been waiting a year to hear. All the fucking "why's" He might get bored of waiting or think I don't want to know nothing about him and grow appart definitely.

And I don't know how long will it take me to end the animation. it's been a year and it isn't ready. Imagine it is 4 months for example, would it me realistic to text back when the videoclip is out?

pfffffff I really really REALLY don't know what to do.

i spent so much time trying to make sense of someone’s silence too, and when he finally came back i realized i still had my own healing to protect. you don’t owe him an immediate answer just because he finally found the courage to reach out.

You are right. I have spent months feeling his silence. Now roles are reversed. So I'll answer (If I do) whenever I feel to

are you hoping for the answers you never got, or are you hoping he can become the person you needed him to be back then

listen, the truth is that you don't need his validation to actually recognize how he hurt you and betrayed you (not to mention the talking with an underage....like what????). Girl, i am in a somehow similar situation and that need of him finally seeing how he hurt me kept me locked in this shitty situation for weeks. But at the end, who is he to finally recognize anything? Tell yourself the truth: if he said what you want to hear, would you believe it's genuine or just a way to crawl back to your life because you somehow moved on, imperfectly or not. Do you really need to interact with this person that hurt you and betrayed you, gaslighted you and treated you like something disposable? He did all these things, do you think a year is enough for him to "change"? im sorry if im sounding hard, girl. But you don't deserve this. You don't deserve to keep waiting to be validated by a piece of trash. You are your own person. The fact youhave a friend SO ADAMANT to protect you and actually cry FOR and WITH you shows me that you are an amazing person, very caring and lovable. Don't reopen these wounds, don't meet him. Keep going foward your dreams, goals, loves, art...the more you keep in a wrong path, the more it will coast you to go back to yourself.

Lots of love, girl. You deserve better
