Why is moving on so hard? my breakup struggles

Author

I find it very funny how we give advice to friends who are suffering through a breakup, and then we can't apply that same advice when we are the ones experiencing heartbreak.
For example, my breakup was 4 months ago, with two and a half months of no contact, but I was still checking her social media, sometimes hundreds of times a day—it became an obsession. From the outside, it was clear that I had to unfollow or mute her to move on with my life and heal, but for me? that was the absolute last option.
What happened? One day she posted something that made me think she had found someone special (only to find out the next day it was something related to her friends, not someone new). I was devastated, but that was the wake-up call I needed to finally stop checking her feeds. I downloaded this app, which is helping me a lot :) so the days you see under my profile name show how long I've gone without looking at her social media.
Even though she isn't seeing anyone, I'm staying strong with my decision to go 100% no contact. Because sooner or later it will actually happen, and I don't want to be there to see it on my screen.
So, what works better for me is to suffer to make decisions instead of listen to my friends? 🫥 such a pity I guess, am I the only one?

i've given my friends the best breakup advice ever and then gone home and done the EXACT opposite 😭 sometimes we need to feel the consequences ourselves before we're ready to let go. be proud of those days you're choosing yourself.

at least we can say we have good friends! although I have noticed that my friends that have been 10 years with their partners and never experienced a bad breakup don't really understand my process, maybe this is why I like this app, there is such empathy here 🙂

You are definitely not the only one. I did better not checking his socials. But then the woman he is seeing became a new member at my church and I saw that post. I was filled with a crazy amount of jealousy and ended up checking her socials just to see if they are in a relationship yet. Why am I torturing myself? It will only hurt me if I see they are a couple.

I think that even we know if will hurt us, it is bigger than us the need to know. Do you think that if you confirm that they are a couple you will suffer but in the end you will be able to move on quicker? In my last breakup it happened to me, I spent two terrible months after finding out she had a new girlfriend BUT after that I knew it was finally over over and the only option was to create a new life for me :)

@blueandgrey thank you for sharing that. I think I do want confirmation so that I know the door is definitely closed. I also want him to be happy and if she could give that to him, it wouldn‘t be the worst. I know I never could.

how did you stop checking your ex socials? or you just get used to it?

the part about not wanting to see her with someone new. when you finally stopped checking her socials, did you feel more relieved or did you still get that urge to look?
