Why can't i let go of my on-and-off boyfriend?

Author

I've spent the last three years in an exhausting on-and-off relationship with my boyfriend. He has just broken up with me for the third time. Our pattern always looks the same: things get hard he insults me blocks me and cuts me off without any real explanation or closure.
I'm left constantly self-blaming wondering what I did wrong and waiting around because he always came back after previous breakups. This relationship drained my social life and left me with barely any support system. Yet despite knowing how badly he treats me I still miss him love him and struggle to let go of the hope that he'll return.
I am so tired of letting my happiness depend on someone who throws me away when things get tough. I want to learn how to choose myself deal with the raw loneliness of starting over and break this cycle permanently. If you've been through this how did you finally walk away for good and get your life back?

the one thing that finally broke the cycle for me was changing his name in my phone to "DO NOT ANSWER, YOU WILL REGRET THIS" and forcing myself to treat every block like a permanent exit instead of a pause button.

i spent three years stuck in that exact same loop with an ex who used blocking and insult rants every time he panicked, leaving me to sit there wondering what i did wrong while my friend group faded away. breaking that cycle is so hard when your brain is conditioned to wait for the comeback, but you deserve so much better than being thrown away like trash.

I'm in a very similar position and don't have any advice, but I wanted to comment so that you know you're not alone.
