I messed up my relationship and don't know if I can fix it. While together an ex from years ago texted me "happy birthday and we briefly caught up about her family. Even though she lives far away and nothing inappropriate happened I hid the conversation from my girlfriend.
When she found out she broke up with me instantly. Whether or not it strictly counts as emotional cheating I know my lack of honesty shattered her trust. I have since apologized and blocked my old ex but my girlfriend asked for space and we haven't spoken in three weeks. I'm afraid I blew my chance for good.

Not emotional cheating but intentionally hiding something from her is a betrayal. You should be able to be open with your partner about anything. That must've really hurt her. Why would your ex go out of their way to wish gou happy birthday anyway? Did you guys talk about boundaries regarding exes?
hiding something small because i was scared of how it would look, then realizing the hiding itself hurt way more than the conversation ever could have. that guilt can eat you alive when you know you caused the crack.
you think part of what hurts most right now is losing her, or knowing you broke the trust she gave you?
The fact that you hid it from her is a huge betrayal because you are pretty much saying you dont trust her with the truth. Think about it if the tables were turned. Would you trust her if she hid talking to an ex. Unfortunately all you can do is give her the space she's asked for and she needs to decide whether she can trust you again or not
No I don’t think so you emotionally cheated. Emotional cheating is when the chat means more than basic catchup. And also your status is single at the moment but it’s great that you recognize this and you love that woman to care so much for her.
