Why is letting go so hard after a situationship?

My situationship ended 2 weeks ago. We've been going on dates for almost 4 months. He was an exchange student and he said he didn't want a long distance relationship, but he still would like to keep in contact with me and said that who knows, maybe we will be together later if it is meant to be.
So since he flew back to his home country we were still texting everyday as "friends". But his texts were still very confusing that were feeding my hope that maybe we really could be in a relationship sometime.
I tried to tell him last week that I need some space and I don't want to talk to him for a while. He said he will try to respect it. But he literally texted me the next day saying that he was thinking of me. Since then we started chatting again. But his texts remained the same...confusing. So I told him yesterday that I really need no contact. So officially this is my first day of no contact now. And I don't know why but I feel guilty. I feel like I am overreacting....why can't I just be friends with him? We weren't even officially together and we both knew that his time here was limited, but it is still hard to let go :(

did you actually want friendship, or were you hoping the daily texts would eventually turn back into a relationship?

That's a good question. I was kinda hoping that maybe he will make up his mind. But he also wanted me to hope...he always said that maybe we could meet again and he could travel to my country after he finishes uni.

My ex and I were starting to get close again, we went on an amazing day, then she remembered our past trauma and said she needs space because her emotions for me were returning. If a girl truly likes a guy, will she ask for space ? I want to hear your opinion. Our relationship could also be labelled as a situationship because we are from 2 different cultures and we understood marriage would be difficult.

Ahh okay, well in my case the reason I asked for space was because he decided to break up with me but still wanted to be friends. And I defo still have feelings for him while he was still giving me mixed signals. So the reason I need space is not only because I still have feelings for him but because he is still giving mixed signals which makes it hard for me to move on.

i don't think you're overreacting at all. i couldn't be friends either while i still hoped for more. giving myself distance hurt at first, but it stopped me from hanging on to "maybe.

Thank you for sharing your experience. No contact is the only solution for me now I think

i had a situationship where we kept texting after it ended, and every sweet message pulled me right back in. no contact was the only thing that finally gave my heart a chance to calm down.

I totally feel you, and I feel like no contact is the only right option for me now. Can I ask if you have ever spoken to him again after you felt like you were over him? Were you able to be friends with him?

You are not overreacting, you are holding up your boundaries. You should be proud. I hope this time and space in no contact can give you the clarity you need. Block him if you need

Thank you so much for your kind words! This really helped me now🥺
