He was unsure about our relationship, but now he keeps contacting me after I ended it
I ended my six-month relationship this morning, after about a month and a half of feeling him withdraw emotionally and physically. He kept telling me that he loved me, but when we finally talked honestly, he was still unsure whether he wanted to continue the relationship. His answer was basically both yes and no, so I told him that, for me, anything other than a clear yes had to mean no.
I had already been processing the possible end of the relationship mostly on my own for weeks. Since the breakup, however, he has messaged me saying that everything feels terrible, that he is not okay, and that his heart is breaking for me and for us. He also said he is only now realizing that his lack of enthusiasm was not about me, but about how overwhelmed and emotionally depleted he has been. He has called me twice as well.
I still love him, but his messages and calls are making me panic after I had briefly felt relieved to be out of the uncertainty. I cannot tell whether he is simply reacting to the reality of losing me or whether he is actually gaining clarity about wanting the relationship.
Has anyone experienced this kind of delayed realization from an ex? How did you distinguish grief and fear of loss from a real willingness to change and build the relationship?

i’ve been in that exact limbo where my ex suddenly sounded certain once i actually walked away. hearing all those feelings after weeks of being unsure messed with my head so badly, because part of me wanted to believe the clarity had finally arrived.
