Why can't i let go of his things?

Author

I know it's really stupid but yesterday I started college and I wanted him to be with me in this new era but It was impossible so I wore a ring he got me (and rarely wore) and a bracelet I did my self with his name written in Morse code with beeds (that I wore a lot) because I wanted to have a bit of him with me in this first days and then I thought I would put them back.

I know that I should keep them in the box with the rest of things but I can't take them off...I don't want to... and I feel stupid for it.

I still wear the earring he got me for my bday bc they're pretty and not that emotional but these are different :(

I also haven't been able to put in the box all the things, I don't want to get rid of ALL at once. I still have his baby pic on my phone case, a posit with his name on my desk, a calendar and some dry flowers.

it's really hard for me because I feel like getting rid of all of this makes it more real than it already feels and it hurts, I know I don't have to do it all know, just step by step but I feel guilty bc i subconsciously think I should...

Instead of thinking it's the first day without him, try thinking of it as the first day of a new adventure.

It's not stupid. Everyone heals at their own pace.

take your time, you dont have to rush anything. Over time I slowly put away things when I felt ready. Some things I kept around because they gave me fond memories. Theres nothing bad when these things give you comfort. Enough time has passed where I have put away everything that reminded me of him. Heck, I even left his Toothbrush around for months before throwing it away

ugh, i don’t think you should feel guilty for still wearing them. i had a box sitting untouched for months, and letting myself do things slowly made it hurt a lot less than forcing myself to erase everything in one day.

that first day of college sounds HUGE already, and you wanted a little piece of him beside you for it. do you think taking them off feels more like losing him again, or like losing the version of yourself you were with him?

keeping little things my ex gave me around because putting them away felt like admitting the relationship was actually over, and that hurt way more than i expected.

It's not stupid! Personally, I'd say you can slowly put those things away in your own time, when you feel like you have healed from the breakup. They are things that can be used daily, so there's nothing wrong with wearing it. For me, he took all his clothes, except one t shirt (still smells like him so I sleep with it), wear my charm bracelet and have a photo of us under my pillow that I kiss every morning/night. Our photos are still on the fridge. We are giving each other time, and I truly believe we can come back stronger for each other. If I get to a point where I don't feel that way anymore, I will slowly put everything away.
