Why can't i let go of my situationship?

Author

Imagine you’ve known someone for years. You’ve always been there for each other, supported one another through difficult times and developed a genuine friendship.

You’ve always found them attractive, but never seriously believed they’d be interested in you.

Then, unexpectedly, something changes.

You discover the attraction is mutual. The chemistry is incredible, the friendship becomes intimate, and suddenly someone you’ve known for years sees you in a way you never thought possible.

But there’s a complication.

You’re still entangled in a long-term relationship that hasn’t been happy for some time. You’ve told your partner you no longer love them, but because you’re frightened of hurting them, you’ve agreed they can continue living with you.

Meanwhile, you think about this other person every day. What started as an unexpected connection has developed into a situationship that neither of you seems able to walk away from. You know that pursuing a proper relationship with them could turn your entire life upside down. You want them in your life, yet you keep insisting you’re not looking for a relationship.

Despite this, you text every day, see each other whenever possible, go out for dinner, talk for hours and somehow never seem to have enough time together. Hours disappear in what feels like minutes. Even the people around you notice the chemistry, and when you look at this person, your eyes seem to betray feelings you’re not prepared to put into words.

You become jealous at the thought of them being with someone else, and the possibility of losing them genuinely hurts.

Yet whenever things start to feel more serious, you retreat. You create distance, but then seem to wait for them to close that distance and chase you again. The other person has made their feelings clear, and you know they love you.

So here’s my question:

Are you simply having your cake and eating it? Or can the fear of disrupting the life you’ve built genuinely outweigh your desire to be with someone else, even when the thought of letting them go feels unbearable?

I’d especially love to hear from people who’ve been on this side of the situation. What was really going through your mind? Were you genuinely conflicted, frightened of change, or simply unwilling to give up either person?

And how did things eventually turn out?

i think you can genuinely love someone and still be too scared to build a life with them. but if you keep asking them to stay while refusing to choose them, at some point your fear becomes their pain, and they shouldn’t have to live in limbo forever.

why scared? and if they finally say they can’t do it anymore, what then? 😞

when you pull away and wait for them to chase you, are you hoping they’ll prove they love you enough to stay, or are you secretly hoping they’ll make the decision you’re too afraid to make yourself?

No he estado en esa situación, y mi respuesta no te va a gustar.
