I’ve had a friendship with my best friend for around 6.5 years. She is a family friend and for most of those years we were extremely close. We spoke every day shared almost everything and she became a very important part of my life. Like any friendship we had arguments but somehow we always found our way back to each other.
The difficult part is that over time a pattern started forming. Whenever we had a serious fight she would say the friendship was over. Sometimes she would block me sometimes she would stop replying completely. After some time we would start talking again. This happened multiple times and every time it left me feeling confused anxious and desperate to fix things. Looking back I realize I often made things worse by not giving her enough space but at the time I was scared of losing someone who meant so much to me.
The first major incident happened in February 2022. We had a fight and I kept texting her because I wanted to fix things. She felt overwhelmed blocked me everywhere and told me we would never talk again. I was completely heartbroken. But after around 20 to 25 days she messaged me saying “Hi” and we started talking again. That was the first time I realized that when she said it was over it didn’t always mean it was truly the end.
Then in November 2022 the same thing happened again. After a fight she ended the friendship and stopped talking to me. I kept trying to reach out sent her a voice note and a custom-made online card and eventually she agreed to talk again. That made me believe that if I just tried hard enough things would eventually get better.
in August 2023 we had another argument. I apologized repeatedly and tried to talk things through but this time she seemed more serious. She told me the friendship was over that it was completely over and that if I sent another message she would block me everywhere. I respected that and stopped replying.
Two days later she sent me a post about how shutting down instead of communicating can be toxic too and she also messaged me asking “can we talk?” Around the same time she ended our 465-day Snapchat streak. That hurt because it felt like a visible sign that something between us had broken. Still we talked again and the friendship continued.
In September 2023 she ended the friendship again. I tried reaching out for around 20 days and eventually she gave me another chance.
In October 2023 she ended it once more. She said that since we are family maybe we shouldn’t continue talking like close friends and that the friendship was over. But by the end of that month after I kept trying we started talking again.
In December 2023 she suddenly stopped replying without explaining what happened. She told me not to text her anymore. I kept trying but she didn’t respond. Then in January 2024 she reached out herself and we started talking again.
In late May 2024 she stopped talking to me again without giving a reason. I continued texting until mid-July but she didn’t respond even once. On July 11 2024 I sent her “there?” and she replied “yes.” After that we started talking again.
Another thing that made this friendship more complicated was that from October 2023 to July 2024 I was living at her house because of university. We were around each other often which made the friendship even more intense. After July 2024 I moved back home because I changed universities.
From October 2023 until June 2026 things were actually really good between us. She was the best version of herself with me during that time. We talked regularly shared things and our bond felt strong again.
Our last call was on June 22 2026. After that she started avoiding calls but still replied to my texts. She even shared something with me on June 26 so I didn’t feel like she had completely distanced herself.
Later I visited her house. On the first day everything seemed normal. The next morning after she woke up her behavior suddenly changed. She became distant and started avoiding me. After I returned home I kept texting her and she replied but only with short one-word answers. It felt like something had changed.
Eventually I asked her “What happened to you? Are you angry at me?” She never replied to that message. She also stopped sending snaps and our 469-day Snapchat streak ended. That hurt because it felt like the daily connection we had built over years had suddenly disappeared.
Later I sent her a long apology message. I told her I knew I had made mistakes that I sometimes pushed too hard trying to fix things and that I was sorry. I told her I would respect her space and wouldn’t repeat those mistakes. She saw the message but didn’t reply.
Now I’m stuck between two feelings. I know I made mistakes by chasing too much sending too many messages and sometimes not giving her the space she needed. At the same time this friendship has a long history of ending and coming back.
This time feels different. It feels quieter colder and more final than before. But because she has come back so many times in the past a part of me still struggles to believe that this is really the end.

accepting their silence as an answer, even when i hated it. i stopped chasing because every extra message just left me feeling smaller, and that gave me room to breathe again.
this is such a long history together. can i ask, has she ever taken real responsibility for ending things over and over, or has it always been you apologizing and trying to put everything back together?
i've been in a friendship where every goodbye turned into another hello, and after a while i stopped trusting my own instincts. i kept waiting for the next comeback instead of asking myself why i was always the one left terrified.
