My ex broke up with me a year ago the day after my birthday.
At the beginning everything felt natural. We took things slowly there was no rush or drama and the first few months were really good. As time passed we both got busy with our studies but we still made time for each other. Then winter came and things started changing.
She became distant. She stopped texting as much stopped making time for us and it felt like I was the only one trying to keep the relationship alive. After winter we sat down and talked about the things we both felt were wrong in the relationship. We agreed to work on them and for a while I believed we were going to get through it.
But as more time passed it became clear that the effort wasn’t equal. There was little communication no dates and barely any time together. She became completely focused on her studies and work almost to the point where the relationship felt like it didn’t exist. The more she pulled away the harder I tried.
My friends and even her friends told me that it seemed like she didn’t value me but I still kept showing up because I loved her. After having those conversations multiple times she eventually left.
The hardest part has been accepting that I tried my best. I cared I showed up and I kept fighting for us even when it felt one-sided. But she still decided I wasn’t someone she wanted to change for or put effort into.
She moved on quickly. She has new friends finished her degree and is travelling. I know it hurt deeply when she told me one reason she left was because she felt I wasn’t ambitious enough. I can’t help comparing myself to her and feeling like I’m not at her level.
She hasn’t looked back once. We haven’t seen each other since last summer even though we live on the same street. I’m scared of running into her and seeing that she feels nothing that the person I loved doesn’t care anymore while I’m still struggling to move forward.
I don’t understand why I can’t get her out of my head after a year especially after feeling undervalued and hurt. The hardest part isn’t that she hates me or that she feels bad. It’s feeling like I don’t matter enough for her to even think about me.

i stayed way too long in a relationship where i kept thinking if i just loved harder they'd meet me halfway. accepting that i did EVERYTHING i could was the part that broke me the most, not even the breakup itself.
i'm in the same situation as you, i just accepted that my life belongs to me, my value has nothing to do with how she saw, sees or will see me. and every day she's making the active decision to not talk to me,and that's a privilege because she's helping me realize that i deserve better, as you do
every time i measured my life against my ex's i ended up reopening the same wound. it took me a while before i believed my worth wasn't decided by whether they chose me.
a year can still feel so fresh when the questions never got answered. i'm wondering, do you miss her, or do you miss the version of the future you thought the two of you were going to have?
