I’ve been single for a while after a really painful breakup and I’ve noticed I’m so much more guarded whenever I start talking to someone new. I catch myself overthinking every little habit or personality trait because I’m terrified of ending up in the same situation again.
Recently I matched with someone who reminds me of my ex in the way they handle disagreements. The similarities hit me almost immediately and ever since then I’ve been mentally comparing the two of them. Every conversation turns into me asking myself "Is this another warning sign?" or "Is this how it started last time?"
The more I compare them the harder it is to see this new person for who they actually are. Instead of letting things unfold naturally I keep expecting the same red flags that hurt me before to show up again.
I really believed being this cautious would protect me from getting my heart broken a second time. But honestly I’m starting to wonder if I’m still carrying so much pain from my last relationship that I’m judging new people through that lens instead of giving them a fair chance.
Has anyone else found themselves overanalyzing every new person after heartbreak? Did your past relationship make it hard to see someone new for who they really were?

re they actually reacting the same way your ex did during disagreements, or is it more that those moments are bringing all those old memories rushing back?
i did the exact same thing after my breakup, every disagreement felt like the start of the same nightmare and i couldn't tell what was my gut and what was my fear. it took me a while before i stopped expecting every new person to become my ex
after my breakup I started using it when I was getting to know new people. I don't think it's a bad thing, it's just another way to be more aware and protect yourself, no need to overthink it
Most definitely, sometimes I had to separate their actions from their character because when you move on to someone new, we shouldn’t let our ex and their actions define how the new person we’re talking to will be. If you start overthinking things, maybe take some time to understand what your triggers are. You shouldn’t let your past relationships prevent you from being happy and wanting love. I understand when you have your guard up because it’s like, “Is this person going to hurt me like my ex, and is it worth getting to know?” But honestly, having the courage to love again, even if it hurts, is something I would appreciate. Not a lot of people can do that or be willing to, I think you should brush those negative thoughts aside and love freely
