Why did she leave after two years?

Author

I was with this girl for almost two years. We met at church camp became best friends first and slowly fell in love. It wasn’t rushed or forced. We built something real. We grew together learned each other and became each other’s safe place.
I loved her with everything I had. I was loyal patient and I stood by her even when things got difficult. I defended her when things were complicated with her parents dealt with the restrictions the arguments and all the moments where we were told we couldn’t see or talk to each other. I stayed because I chose her.
I wrote her real letters the kind where you pour everything out. I told her how much I loved her how proud I was of her and how much she meant to me. I bought her gifts even when money was tight. Perfume she liked little bracelets small things that reminded her she was loved. I gave her my jackets and sprayed them with my cologne so she could feel close to me when I wasn’t around.
I tried. I really did.
We talked about everything. Marriage. Kids. Our future. The house we wanted someday. She told me I was the person she wanted forever. She told me I made her feel safe and loved in a way she never had before.
As I got older I started taking my future more seriously. Joining the Air Force wasn’t a random decision. It was something I worked toward and something I had talked about with her many times. We knew what it would mean.
She knew there would be distance.
She knew there would be time apart.
She knew it would take sacrifice.
But she still told me she was choosing me. She said she would wait. She said we would get through it.
Before I left I asked her directly if she still wanted this. I told her I would understand if long distance felt too hard. I told her I would fight for us but I needed to know she was still in it too.
She promised she was.
So I believed her.
I went into basic training holding onto those promises.
Looking back there were moments where I felt something was different. Replies became slower. The energy changed. Something felt off. But I ignored it because I loved her. I trusted her. I believed in what we had built.
While I was away getting yelled at exhausted missing home and thinking about her every night she started talking to someone else.
Then she blocked me everywhere.
When I finally got a chance to call she told me she didn’t want me to contact her anymore.
No real explanation. No closure. Just gone.
She says it wasn’t cheating because nothing physical happened but it still hurts. I was still loyal. I was thinking about her every day. I carried her pictures prayed for her and used our relationship as motivation to keep going.
I was writing letters in my head to someone who was already moving on.
I was buying gifts for someone who had already stopped choosing me.
The hardest part is knowing I trusted her with my heart during one of the hardest times in my life and it felt like she let it fall.
And somehow after everything I still care.
It has been months now. I’m in tech school preparing to go to Japan. I’m doing well. I’m staying busy talking to new people staying focused and building my future.
But I still miss her.
No one feels like her.
I still think about our memories our inside jokes our late-night talks the way she looked at me and the way she made everything feel okay.
I still catch myself imagining giving her flowers in my blues and wondering what our life would have looked like if things had worked out.
And as much as my mind tells me not to a part of me knows that if she came back and truly meant it I would still want to try.
I loved her more than I’ve ever loved anyone.
And she left when I needed her most.
I don’t know if I was too loyal if I loved too hard or if I should have listened to the little signs I noticed before leaving.
I just know I’m tired of pretending I’m completely over it.
Not because I’m obsessed. Not because I can’t live without her.
No matter where life takes me or how much time passes a part of me will always care about her.

i missed the person i thought i still had, not chasing someone who had already stopped choosing me. that truth sucked, but it gave me somewhere to stand.

i keep thinking about the part where you said you noticed little signs before you left. do you think she already knew she was pulling away, or did everything change once the distance became real?
