he chose to meet me fear with kindness instead of judgment. during every adventure he stayed by my side when I was scared and he fell even more in love with the way I dreamed bigger than either of them.
later he realized I had been right about the drugs. the book I gave him the conversations about letting go of that life and teaching his brain a different way to live all of it helped. when quitting hit him hard and he felt like he was nothing they cried together. I held him through the worst of it. for the first time in his life he felt safer in someone's arms than he ever had as a child because this time the monster wasn't his father it was the battle inside himself.
he also came to understand that many of mine flaws were shaped by years of stress and pain. I had survived them and I used what I'd lived through to help other people whenever I could. I never ran from my feelings even if I didn't always know the healthiest way to cope with them.

i’ve watched someone i loved fight their own battles too, and there’s something heartbreaking about loving someone through the parts where they don’t even recognize themselves yet.
this was heavy to read. i learned that loving someone through their darkest season doesn’t mean carrying the whole weight for them
do you feel like you were both healing together, or were you carrying more of his pain than your own?
