I went to work this morning and saw him, but I didn't go up to him or try to talk to him. While I was putting my things in my locker, he came over, said good morning, and asked how I was. I told him I was fine. My nose was running, so he asked if I was sick. I said yes, and he told me to get well soon.
Then we started work. We work in a small gym, so I can see him pretty much all the time. But today I wanted to focus on myself, so I deliberately stood with my back turned so I wouldn't constantly see him.
Later, I ran into him by the water dispenser. He told me I should drink something warm since I was sick. I told him I didn't want anything.
A little later, he came over with the others and said they were going to order toast and that if I didn't have anything to eat, he could order one for me too. I told him I already had a sandwich with me, so I didn't need anything.
When the food arrived, our instructor let all of us take a break. As I was grabbing my bag, my phone rang. It was him. He told me where he was and asked all of us to come over and sit with him and the others.
So we went out together and sat down to eat. While I was taking my sandwich out of my bag, he told me that he would have ordered toast for me if I wanted it, but since I had told him I had a sandwich, he didn't. I told him, “I know. You don't have to explain that to me.
They were talking about an ice cream place they had gone to at some point. "While they were talking about it, he turned to me and said, "You should go there sometime." One day you and I—” Then he stopped himself and corrected it to, "You should go there sometime too."
"i just said, "how would i even get there?" I don't know where it is," and dropped the subject.
About ten minutes before we were supposed to leave the break, he suddenly turned to me and said, "You haven't said anything this whole time. "Why are you so quiet?"
I told him I was sick and still hadn't recovered.
Then we went back to work.
"Next, one of our instructors came up to me and jokingly said, "You're such a badass." I had no idea what he meant or what had happened, so eventually I went and asked my ex what that was about and why the instructor had said that to me.
Apparently, he had met some French female athletes at a Hyrox competition and had liked some of their competition photos, so the instructors were teasing me about it.
"i just said, "seriously?" All this because you liked some women's photos? He said yes. I said, "Okay, whatever," and went back to what I was doing.
After that, we studied together for a while.
"at one point, he picked up one of the pen electrodes we use for facial treatments at the clinic and directly asked me, "Have you ever tried this?"
I said I hadn't. He told me to try it on him, so I did. For the electrode to work, I had to touch his face with one hand while grounding him with the other hand. I put my hand on his cheek and used the electrode with my other hand, but he said he couldn't feel anything. "Then he said, "Come here, let me do it to you," and tried it on me too."
We basically ended up messing around with the electrode and testing whether we could actually feel the current. It was a stupid little moment, but there was still that small physical closeness between us.
Later, it was already past my scheduled leaving time. I was supposed to leave at two, but it was already around four. The others were supposed to stay until six, but around four they asked our instructor if they could leave early. Instead, the instructor sent them on a meal break.
I had already gotten permission from another instructor to leave, so when I saw them heading out for their meal break, I went over to them. I watched them for a little while, and then, since I was about to leave, I said, "Enjoy your meal," and told them I was going home.
"Then he asked me, "Why aren't you coming with us?"
I said I didn't know, maybe they might feel uncomfortable if I was always around them or maybe I'd make things awkward, so I thought I should leave.
He and the others started joking around, saying things like, "Why would we be uncomfortable because of you?" Come with us.
So I ended up going with them and sitting down with everyone.
Nothing particularly significant happened after that. We just talked normally as a group.
The interesting part of today was that I genuinely wasn't trying to get his attention. I didn't go looking for him, I didn't try to start conversations with him, and I spent most of the day deliberately focusing on myself.
Yet he still came over to check on me, asked whether I was sick, reminded me to drink something warm, offered to order food for me, called me during the break and asked me to join them, noticed that I was unusually quiet, and didn't want me to leave when I was about to go home.
"and somehow, despite all of that, we're still not together."
That is probably the hardest part for me.
Why doesn’t he want to be with me again? I miss him so much. Do you think he’ll come back to me?

someone can care about you deeply and still not be ready to get back together. i’d try not to turn every toast offer or little moment of closeness into an answer about the relationship, even though i know how hard that is.
I actually agree with you. I don't think every little thing he does means he's coming back, and I'm trying not to interpret it that way anymore. Six days ago he explicitly told me he doesn't want a relationship, so until I hear something different from him, I don't consider reconciliation a possibility.
What confuses me is that I can still feel how much he cares about me in certain moments. For example, when we were messing around with the electrodes and he looked at me, I could literally see his eyes light up, and feeling loved by him made me happy. Even the ice cream thing made me laugh when he accidentally started saying “you and I” before correcting himself.
I know those things don't necessarily mean he wants to get back together. They just feel really good, especially because I remember how openly he used to show his love before. He used to come all the way to my door just to see me. Now I'm somehow finding myself trying to understand his feelings through the way he looks at me, and honestly, that makes me angry too.
i've had those days where every tiny bit of care from an ex felt like proof they were coming back, and then i'd go home wondering why we still weren't together.
I know exactly what you mean. And I think that's why these little moments affect me so much. I used to have someone who would openly show me how much he loved me, and now I'm happy over things as small as him looking at me a certain way or asking me to come along with him.
I don't necessarily take those moments as proof that he's coming back anymore. I just enjoy them while they're happening because they make me feel loved, and I miss feeling that way.
At the same time, it honestly makes me a little angry with myself that these things can make me so happy now. I don't want to have to search for signs in his looks when I used to know exactly how he felt because he would simply tell me and show me.
this honestly sounds like he was paying a LOT of attention to you today. when he noticed you were quiet and kept asking you to come along, did it feel like he was trying to reconnect with you, or more like he was just being comfortable around you again?
I think it was more like he was trying to spend time with me than consciously trying to reconnect. When he asked why I wasn't coming with them, I felt like he genuinely wanted me there and didn't want me to feel left out or alone.
And that actually meant a lot to me because there have been plenty of times since the breakup when I've felt completely ignored by him. So the fact that he could have just let me leave but instead asked me to come with them did make me happy.
I just don't understand why he wants to spend time with me and still doesn't want to be in a relationship with me. That's the part I can't make sense of.
