Why am i still thinking about my ex at work?

I finally figured out why I was having those crying spells yesterday: I got my period. šŸ˜šŸ˜‚
All the stress I’ve been going through apparently messed up my cycle, so I didn’t even realize my period was coming.
I want to tell you about something my friend and I talked about last night.
I’ve mentioned before how small the workplace I work at is and how I constantly run into my ex there. There are two teams at this workplace. One team has four people, including my ex, and they work there six days a week. My friend and I are on the other team, which works more part-time, so we’re there a maximum of four or five days a week.
Yesterday, while talking to my friend, we realized something: my ex is the only person in that group who treats us well and actually helps us. The others constantly act like they’re trying to put us down or belittle us, even though we all do the same job.
We also realized that one of the girls in that group has apparently been gossiping about both me and my friend, and we’ve apparently been gossiping about each other without knowing it. Let’s call her X. While talking about all this, we remembered some things.
For example, ever since my ex and I broke up, whenever X talked to me, she would tell me that he didn’t want a relationship. I would ask, ā€œIs he talking to someone?ā€ and she would say no. I would ask, ā€œDid he tell you something?ā€ and she would say no again. I would say, ā€œThen is it written on his forehead that he doesn’t want a relationship?ā€ but she never gave me an answer.
X and I were actually close friends this year, but we haven’t really talked much since the beginning of summer because I realized how much she gossips.
Another thing came back to me. Some time after my ex and I broke up, we decided to stay friends and went to the cinema together. However, a few days after the cinema, my ex told me that he didn’t want to stay friends anymore and that we could only talk at work. After that, I spoke to X on the phone, and she told me, ā€œWe told your ex, ā€˜Why are you going? You shouldn’t have gone.ā€™ā€ That made me wonder whether their comments had influenced his decision not to see me outside of work anymore.
Now that I think about it, these are the people who spend 11–12 hours a day with my ex. Of course, I’m not questioning his reasons for breaking up with me. But it does make me realize that apparently my relationship is being discussed behind my back.
Maybe, if my ex ever wanted to fix things between us, he might have come to talk to me, but perhaps these people told him, ā€œDon’t get back together with her. You’re doing perfectly fine right now.ā€
I don’t know. Maybe none of this is actually happening. But realizing all of this has definitely made me question some things.

By the way, I don’t think X did any of this because she has feelings for my ex. But since she’s the kind of person who talks behind everyone’s back, I also can’t say that I’m completely surprised if she did something like this.

i’d be careful with X, but i wouldn’t let guesses become facts in your head either. i learned the hard way that chasing what people might have said only kept me tied to my ex longer.

do you feel like you’re trying to understand what really happened, or hoping there’s still a reason behind the breakup that could change things?

after my breakup i started connecting every little comment and conversation around my ex, trying to figure out who influenced what. it drove me CRAZY because i could never know what was actually said.
