i can't stop hoping she'll come back even though she's already moving on
about a month ago i met a girl at work. let's call her laura.
we clicked almost instantly. we teased each other nonstop laughed at everything made our own little inside jokes and the flirting came naturally. after a few dates we admitted we were both attracted to each other. after that came hugs kisses and more affection. we ended up going on around 15 dates outside of work.
what made it feel even more special was that this was all new for her. she'd never really dated anyone before never kissed a guy never experienced this kind of closeness. she told me more than once that what she felt with me was something she'd never experienced before.
i felt it too.
i wasn't just attracted to her. i genuinely fell in love with who she was. i could picture a future with her.
then i messed up.
there was an issue involving some messages and one of her friends. something i said came across as pressure even though that wasn't my intention at all. i realized it almost immediately and apologized several times.
but something changed for her.
she told me she never imagined i'd act that way and if something like that happened after only a month she couldn't stop wondering what things would be like later. she ended things before we ever became an official couple.
that crushed me because to me it felt like one misunderstanding erased an incredible month.
later we had a long conversation. i told her i respected her decision but i didn't want to throw away everything we'd built because of one mistake. i suggested slowing things down completely hanging out as friends first then seeing where things went naturally.
she agreed we could still spend time together but she was clear that she couldn't promise her feelings would come back.
she also told me that what we shared had been real. she even said "not right now... maybe with time i don't know."
those words gave me hope.
then i found out she had started talking to other guys.
she mentioned there were guys she found attractive and some had already asked her out again. at one point she even asked "do you want me to see them so you'll stop hoping?"
that hurt more than i expected.
then came the moment i can't get out of my head.
we were on break at work. she came in later than usual and for a second i thought maybe she'd come to sit with me.
instead another coworker showed up and she immediately started talking to him. asking about his life his family laughing with him. it was the same kind of conversation she used to have with me when we were getting to know each other.
i sat there pretending to look at my phone while it happened right beside me.
it felt like i was watching someone i still love start investing in someone else.
now i'm stuck between two thoughts.
part of me believes maybe she'll remember what we had and eventually want to try again.
the other part keeps telling me i'm keeping myself available while she's already moving on.
i also keep replaying everything involving her friend and wondering if things would've been different if that situation had never happened. maybe we'd still be together. maybe we'd have kept discovering all those firsts together.
i know i'm probably romanticizing a future that never existed.
but it feels so real.
i don't just feel like i lost someone i liked. i feel like i lost a future i had already started believing in.
it's only been a little over a week and my mind keeps bouncing between wanting to fight for her and knowing i should leave her alone.
am i holding onto false hope?
should i let go completely even though she said she's open to hanging out again?

i had someone i barely got to fully have, and somehow i grieved the whole future we talked about like we’d already lived it. that “maybe with time” kept me stuck for way longer than i want to admit.
damn, that break room moment sounds brutal. do you think hanging out with her right now would actually feel good, or would you spend the whole time watching for signs she might come back?
I was in the same situation once. You have to stop engaging with her. She is moving on.
