Why did our relationship turn sour this year?

Our relationship has always had its ups and downs but this year has been the hardest. We've argued a lot and he has told me that he doesn't like my personality. Honestly he's right about some of the things he said. I've been quiet distant and not very good at communicating or keeping conversations going. None of it was intentional but I know it affected him.
Today he had a difficult day at work and was feeling anxious. Since we both work from home he jokingly called me out about something. I was trying to explain myself and raised my voice a little. He got upset that I was raising my tone and I told him that I'd forgotten he was the only one "allowed" to do that in our house.
That turned into an argument and this time he said he was done. He told me to find a new place and said I needed to take him seriously.
After years together I'm completely in shock. He's been in the other room all day and barely communicating with me. I don't know what to do. I can't accept that this might really be over. I love him. I still want to be with him and more than anything I want him to love me the way he used to.

i've made mistakes in relationships too, and i know how easy it is to turn every criticism into proof that you're the whole problem. i tried so hard to fix myself once that i forgot i deserved to feel safe and heard too.

do you feel like he had been quietly reaching this point for a while, or did this argument genuinely feel like the moment everything changed?

Apologize for how you’ve been, and then go no contact. Give him space, give him time to calm down. Then maybe you guys could have a conversation. Time apart might be a blessing in disguise.

i've been in that room with someone i loved, knowing something huge had just changed and feeling completely frozen. the part about wanting him to love you like he used to really got me.

that's hard and living together without space is a challenge having peace of mind. Space is good and thank you for sharing we are all here enduring heart break 💔 I think if he still wants to be with you to talk once cooled off and apologize for anything you think you did that might have crossed a line and to ask if there's anything that needs addressed. It's easy to shut down and not say anything when Ultimately if the relationship is to be fixed it takes work from both sides. Independence is key to happiness, on the contrary, being dependent on others will always let us down, we should try to accept them and when we love them we can say that we support them and are on their side
