Why did he break up after we were so close?

So my ex and I have been on and off for a little over two years now. We were pretty immature with how we handled things and most of the time I was the one who would suddenly leave cut him off everywhere but somehow always leave a little door open for me to come back. And he always did.
At the beginning of this year we decided to give it another shot after all the back and forth. This time felt different. It honestly felt like we had finally figured things out. We were more loving let things naturally turn into a relationship spent some really amazing moments together did almost everything together and for the first time we were both completely open about how we felt.
We weren’t able to see each other as often as most couples probably do maybe once or twice every 10 days on average. As things got more serious though we both became pretty possessive of each other. We tried to convince ourselves it was just because we cared so much but there were also outside issues like our age gap and the fact that his family didn’t approve of us.
Just 10 days ago we were celebrating his birthday. I went all out for him decorated a room and everything. Then suddenly something changed.
I felt like he became colder toward me so I became colder too. A few days later I went for a drive with some friends. My phone was dying he knew that and we ended up miles away. To be fair I understand why that would upset him because I probably wouldn’t have been happy about it either.
I went over to his place and we talked about it. We had some things to do during the day then I ended up staying the night. The whole energy between us felt strange. He was really annoyed with me but when I asked if he still wanted to fix things he said “Of course I want to fix it” and “We’ll figure it out like we always do.”
The next morning there was so much tension. I genuinely felt like he hated me. I went home but I still asked if we could work through everything and he said yes.
The following day I asked if we could actually talk about what happened. He said he needed some time to process everything. I asked again the next day and he ended up breaking up with me over the phone.
I completely lost it. I begged and begged until I honestly felt like I had lost all my dignity. When I asked if he saw any way for us to get through this he said “I think it’s for the best.” But when I asked if there could ever be a chance for us in the future he said he had no idea.
We’ve always ended up coming back to each other so I don’t know what to make of this.
What makes it even harder is that the day before all of this happened I was lying in his bed while he was telling me he loved me and that I was his girl.
Everyone around me thinks this could be some kind of control tactic and that he knows exactly how much power he has over me because of our history.
Then while he was breaking up with me he said “Please don’t cut me off. It’s not my style. I want us to both be able to check up on each other occasionally when we need each other.”
I genuinely don’t know what to think. Do you think he really wants this relationship to end or is this another part of our cycle?

i'd take what he said seriously for now, especially the part about ending it, even if he still loves you. the “please don't cut me off” part would mess with my head too, but i learned i can't heal while staying available for someone who isn't choosing me.

do you think you want him back because you genuinely believe this relationship can be different, or because your history has taught you that every ending eventually turns into another beginning?

i've been in one of those cycles where every breakup felt temporary because we always found our way back. when it finally ended differently, i kept looking for signs that we'd repeat the pattern too, and that hope hurt like hell.
