back in june i started dating this guy and through him i met his best friend. Along with my own best friend the four of us quickly became a really fun little friend group. Everything was going great until my boyfriend and i broke up about a month later and things ended badly. He cursed me out and blocked me everywhere.
Then last night he suddenly unblocked me on one app and messaged me. He apologized for how he treated me during the breakup and said some of his older friends had influenced him to act that way. He admitted he was wrong and said he knew that wasn’t really who he was. I’m pretty forgiving and since that behavior didn’t feel like the person i knew i accepted his apology.
After that he brought up our old friend group. He said he really missed how things used to be between the four of us and asked if we could all reconnect just as friends. I talked it over with my best friend first. She wasn’t particularly attached to the group anymore but we figured there was no harm in giving it a try so i agreed.
He made a new group chat but as soon as we started talking everything felt completely different. It was painfully awkward and i immediately realized this probably wasn’t going to work. There’s just too much history between my ex and me and trying to recreate the friendship we had before felt forced. I kept thinking there was no way it would ever feel the same again.
So i messaged everyone and said i thought it would be better if we stayed distant friends or acquaintances instead. Then i left the group chat.
Now i can’t stop stressing about it. I feel like i’m the bad guy and like i’m the one who ruined the group. I really don’t want to be the reason everyone else lost something they enjoyed and part of me keeps wondering if i should’ve stayed and pushed through the awkwardness to see if things eventually became normal.
Did i make the right choice by removing myself or did i give up too quickly? How do you deal with friend group dynamics after a breakup?

i tried forcing myself to stay in a friend group with my ex after we broke up because i was scared of being the one who changed everything, and every hangout just felt weird and painful. you didn’t ruin the group by admitting that it didn’t feel right anymore.
