My girlfriend and I broke up today and I’m struggling really badly with it. We’ve been together since January 2025.
We were long-distance. I’m about 200 km away. I came back almost every weekend to see her. We loved each other deeply but over time our relationship became extremely conflictual.
We argued about once a week with bigger fights roughly once a month. Little things would turn into huge arguments we’d both get frustrated and eventually we’d say things we didn’t really mean. She sometimes told me things like I hate you I’m breaking up with you you’re horrible” or you ruin everything. I said hurtful things too although probably less harshly. Eventually I started feeling like I couldn’t say anything without risking another fight.
At the same time she felt like I wasn’t loving her in the way she needed. She wanted me to plan more dates and felt like I took her for granted. Looking back I can understand some of what she wanted even though I also felt like some of the things that upset her became much bigger than they needed to be.
And despite all of that there was so much good between us.
She was incredibly affectionate and I loved her so deeply. We went on vacation together made so many memories and shared our first time together. She was also there for me when my previous relationship ended which makes losing her even harder.
There was also another guy she met while working a summer job. After another argument I went to see her and brought her a gift. She seemed distant and mentioned breaking up. I asked if there was someone else and she admitted she was confused about this guy. I don’t know exactly what happened so I don’t want to assume anything.
Today we finally met in person to break up.
I started crying as soon as I saw her. She cried too. We hugged I kissed her on the cheek and we both cried when we left. I gave her my childhood stuffed animal because she’s always been very attached to stuffed animals.
She told me she would have liked things to work out but she just couldn’t do it anymore.
Itold her I loved her and that I had hoped until the very end that seeing each other would somehow change things.
And honestly I still want her so badly.
I miss her voice. I miss falling asleep in her arms. I look around my room and see reminders of her everywhere. I don’t want to heal if healing means forgetting her or becoming indifferent. I don’t want someone else. I want her. I want us to love each other and somehow fix everything that was hurting us.
A few hours after the breakup she even messaged me because she had argued with her parents and felt like they weren’t supporting her. She told me her parents missed me and was talking to me almost like we were still together.
I told her I was too hurt to have a normal conversation and needed some time. She apologized several times and we said goodnight.
I know logically that we had too many conflicts and that something needed to change. I know love alone doesn’t automatically make a relationship healthy.
But emotionally I just can’t accept that this is over.
And I have another problem. I start my second year of preparatory school in about ten days. I’m supposed to study and move forward with my life while it feels like my entire future just disappeared.
I’m not looking for someone to tell me I’ll find someone else.
I don’t want someone else right now.

that awful first-day feeling where your whole future still has their face in it. i remember looking around my room and feeling like every little thing was proof of what i’d lost, and the thought of “moving on” felt almost insulting.
