You don't need them to be happy. Love yourself the way they couldn't, the way you deserve and if it was meant to be they'll be back when you both are ready, but don't work on yourself just to make them come back. Work on yourself to be happy with yourself, to love the parts of yourself they couldn't

this one hit me. i spent so long hoping my ex would notice how much i'd changed, and eventually realized i wanted to feel proud of myself even if she never came back. that shift hurt like hell, but it gave me my life back.
how can that happen after she made me love myself. i hated myself b4 her, she used to tell me how much she loves me which made me heal somehow but now i hate my self w/o her
i love this, but how do you stop secretly hoping they'll come back while you're trying to work on yourself?
First step is to just be okay with that feeling. it's okay to hope they'll come back but try to distract yourself somehow when that thought comes
wanting my ex to come back so badly that i started treating my own healing like a way to get them back. learning to love the parts of me they couldn't love was the part that finally changed things for me
I agree with you. Build yourself rather than making them happy
