I recently received final closure after confessing my feelings to a close friend I’ve loved for a long time. Our bond developed over years of shared daily life dinners and dog walks. When I first learned she was dating someone a few months ago I pulled back but we eventually rebuilt our closeness—which secretly kept my hope alive.
After a great day out together recently I told her my feelings hadn't changed. She was kind and empathetic but firm: she loves our friendship but that is all she can offer and she didn't want to leave me with false hope. We ended the conversation on good terms with mutual respect but I am left feeling heartbroken all over again.
Because the things I love about her are embedded in our everyday friendship I’m struggling with how to move forward. Total contact cutoff isn't an option since we work together but I am planning to step back from personal hangouts to give myself room to recover. I don't blame her at all and appreciate her honesty but I’m deeply grieving the future I envisioned.
If you’ve been deeply in love with a close friend were you ever able to maintain a true friendship after closure or did you need to step away to fully heal? How did you figure out your path forward?

Focus on other relationships and yourself. Enjoy spending time with her when you both happen to be at group events for a bit, and keep your 1:1 communications to a minimum.
You will heal, and after some time you'll be able to sense whether it's a good idea to reconnect more directly with her
Stepping back is the only thing that gave me any clarity in a similar situation, trying to stay close just kept reopening the same wound
You already know the friendship is the exact environment where your feelings grew, so staying in it right now is basically asking your brain to do the impossible
