Why can't i move on from my past relationship?

I am mentally exhausted from constantly ruminating over my past relationship. We broke up amicably a year ago due to long-distance after I relocated for work post-graduation. I eventually moved back to my hometown primarily because I was miserable without her.
When I recently reached out she rejected my advances and revealed she is back with her ex. While I respected her boundary it reopened old wounds.
On paper my life is thriving: I have a great job a strong support system and healthy hobbies. Emotionally however I am completely stagnant. I constantly obsess over her new relationship jumping to extreme conclusions about their future and imagining scenarios where we end up together. I realize my brain is desperately searching for certainty but it only leaves me anxious over hypothetical situations.
The most terrifying part is that this anxiety and overthinking have become my new normal. Even on my good days there is a persistent exhausting background noise in my head that I can't shake.

every time i checked or imagined some future reunion, i got a few minutes of relief and then ten times more anxiety, so eventually i chose the quiet even when it felt brutal.

she’s with someone else, do you think some of the rumination is also grief over the life you changed for her that never came back?

I really feel this. It's so incredibly frustrating when your life looks perfect on paper but your brain refuses to let go of the 'what ifs.' That constant background noise of anxiety is absolutely exhausting, and it makes total sense why you're feeling stagnant. It's like your brain is desperately trying to solve a puzzle that has no solution. Please be gentle with yourself. A year is a long time, but reopening a wound hurts just as much as the first time. You're not alone in this

having a life that looks completely fine while your mind is still stuck on one person. i could be working, laughing with friends, doing everything right, and still have that little voice running through every possible future with my ex.
