Why can't i stop missing my first girlfriend after our breakup?

Author

Four months ago my first girlfriend broke up with me and I am still struggling to process it. Throughout our long-distance relationship I put in extreme effort—staying up until 4 AM reading her to sleep sending detailed multi-page compliments giving gifts and dedicating nearly all my free time to her despite her looking noticeably different in person than in her photos.
In January my school workload intensified. Even though I still called her every night and texted her throughout the day she began having breakdowns over my absence and blaming me for them. She constantly grew angry over things out of my control such as my parents taking my phone or unexpected schedule conflicts. While I quickly forgave her flaws she held on to every mistake I made. Right before my final exams she sent a 7-page text ending things over my supposed lack of support.
Post-breakup we tried remaining friends but she used that access to mock my loneliness and brag about a new guy she was pursuing. The distress was so severe that it impacted my health and attendance forcing me to block her on everything in mid-May.
I am now stuck in a cycle of grief anger and self-doubt. I hate how she treated me yet I miss her constantly and dread the thought of her giving someone else the love we shared. How do I heal from this level of emotional burnout stop self-blaming and move forward?

i had to stop using my ex’s treatment of me as a measure of whether i was good enough. i gave more than i had too, and for a long time i kept replaying every mistake until i finally accepted that one person can’t carry an entire relationship alone.

i keep coming back to that fear of her giving someone else the love you shared, do you think you miss her as she really was, or the girlfriend you kept hoping she would become?

giving so much of myself that when it ended i couldn’t tell if i missed the person or the version of myself who tried so hard to make it work. the part where you still miss her while knowing how badly she treated you is such a horrible kind of grief.
