Why did my best friend turn into my ex? navigating heartbreak

Author

My ex and I transitioned from college best friends into a loving relationship but the dynamic eventually became exhausting. I poured myself into taking care of her yet her expectations constantly shifted leaving me walking on eggshells and feeling like my emotional and practical support were never enough. Long-distance only made it harder to communicate.
She eventually ended things largely because she felt my career wasn't progressing fast enough. Shortly after the split my professional life transformed—I earned a managerial promotion traveled internationally and secured an EU Blue Card. When we met up during a visit to India we shared a good conversation but she reaffirmed her decision to move on. During that meeting I cried in front of her and her cold reaction made me feel deeply ashamed of my emotions.
Today she seems to be thriving on social media while I remain stuck in anger grief and self-blame. I'm not posting this to get people to take my side or villainize her. I am seeking honest insight into what lessons I can take away from this relationship and how to process these complex feelings.

i’ve been that person who gave so much in a relationship that i started measuring my worth by how much more i could do for her. when it ended, i was angry at her and embarrassed by how badly i still wanted her softness, especially when i didn’t get it back.

i had to stop using my ex’s reaction to my emotions as a measure of whether those emotions were okay. crying in front of someone you loved after losing them is human, and honestly, i’d take the lesson from how exhausted you felt trying to keep up with shifting expectations.

i keep thinking about the career part too, because you’ve built so much since the breakup, do you think some of the anger comes from wishing she had stayed long enough to see the person you became?
